BIM 360 Roadmap

The BIM 360 “next gen” Platform

Since we introduced BIM 360 in 2010, we have expanded the BIM 360 portfolio as a group of products to support construction workflows from pre-construction through handover and operations through our BIM 360 Field, BIM 360 Glue, BIM 360 Plan and BIM 360 Docs services.  Each of these services have a common look and feel, and share a common user, company and project administration, but essentially function as separate products.  That’s all changing with the “next generation” of BIM 360.  BIM 360 has evolved from a set of separate solutions to a construction management platform that offers a more integrated, workflow-focused, “one-product” experience.

You can configure the BIM 360 platform so that each user gets just the features they need on each project. With a new unified administration experience and common user interface across all our features, both administrators and users will save time setting up projects and using BIM 360.

The BIM 360 platform also features a single, common data platform to let you access all of your project information from anywhere in BIM 360.  The drawings, models and files that you upload during the design phase can be carried into the construction phase to support RFIs, Submittals, Inspections and more.

On top of all this, we have built a powerful insight and analytics layer. This includes interactive dashboards and reporting, and we will continue to expand our machine learning engine to offer up “early warning” features that alert you to areas of your project that are creating risk and need attention.

The BIM 360 platform has been built in partnership with our customers, and we are excited to share our current roadmap plans for the platform to let you know what we are working on and so you can help us shape the future of BIM 360 by providing your feedback.  Click on the links below to see what our development priorities are for each area of the next generation BIM 360 platform:

Can you please provide commentary on what apps are currently supported/available for BIM 360 or what the roadmap is to add those beyond iOS? I have customers that are very interested but refuse to replace their Windows tablets with iOS.

Thanks for your question. We do have a number of mobile apps for BIM 360. However, we are now consolidating all of our next gen mobile features into a single app called BIM 360. The BIM 360 app is available on smartphone and tablet for both iOS and Android.

We have a number of other iOS apps – BIM 360 Field, BIM 360 Glue, BIM 360 Plan, BIM 360 Ops. Most of these support our classic applications. All of our applications can be accessed on Windows tablets via popular browsers. We do not yet have a “native” Windows mobile app that can be used offline.

Please make the items listed under Account and Project Admin a priority.
Current project creation processes and user management is extremely cumbersome and frustrating.

I agree that this needs to be put to the forefront as the project creation process requires too much time to complete. Over the last year and a half, I have had to create over 1000 projects by hand, something that takes months to do when you need to create the project, set permissions to the folders, and add about 100 users to each project. What has taken me months so far, should only take hours at the most since it is repeating the same tasks over and over again (perfect for automation).
As companies have to invest more time in creating projects, they are going to get frustrated and start considering other applications even ones without the great benefits that BIM 360 has to offer. This is an unnecessary slow down in the adoption of BIM 360.

Do you have any plans for supporting AutoCAD Plant 3D in BIM360 ?

We have users in both facility and process design using all kind of Autodesk tools – also Plant 3D and see a need for the collaboration to take part in BIM360

    best regards
    Martin

    Hello Mike,
    The roadmap looks great!
    Thanks for sharing.

Perhaps it would be good to share with you the items on our wishlist. Some of these are already posted as IDEAS…

    – Could you pls replicate the Section Tool from Navisworks because the section tool in Navisworks is Beautiful. It can align to an object. It is available even when you zoom in to take a closer look at an object (unlike BIM360 where it is fixed at the centre of the model. Its very annoying indeed).
    – The ability to co-relate an ISSUE in plan/ section/ 3D views would be great. Sometimes we drop a small sphere family wherever we see an issue. This family can be seen in all views.
    – Currently there is no way to assign a markup to a user (Or even notify that there have been markups)
    – Autodesk Support: We end up spending a lot of hours to explain the issues we are facing. Can we go to a central database of all reported issues & just pick from there “I am facing this issue too”… just like the IDEA forum?
    – The ability to ‘Drop Folders including Sub-Folder’ in BIM360. (Essential)
    – Desktop Connector is super slow while synchronising changes to BIM360. Compare it with OneDrive & OneDrive is at least 10 times faster. can we see some improvements in this area?

    Thank You !

      Hello,
      Thank you for your feedback.

We definitely plan to make some changes to the sectioning tool in BIM 360, to bring it closer to the sectioning tools available in other Autodesk authoring or viewing applications.

We’re currently working on enhancing the markup toolset and experience. The ability to share markups with individuals or groups has been brought up quite often, so it’s one of the improvements we’re currently exploring.

      Thanks,
      Doreen

Hi Gupta, thanks for the feedback. The most recent version of Desktop Connector allows you to drag and drop folder structures (including sub-folders) that will then show up in Docs. Does that meet the requirements your describe? Also we have ongoing investment in improving the performance / upload speed of the Desktop Connector.
      Many thanks!
      Richard

    Hello Mike,

One thing that would be useful to our institution is the ability to customize the daily report under Field Management. We would like the ability to create issues and tasks directly out of the daily report and assign them to a contractor. For example a design professional could be walking the job site generating their on-site observation report. They may notice something and want to create an issue from within their report and assign it to the sheet metal contractor. This is different than just an observation on job-site progress that doesn’t need to be tracked to resolution.

The design professional may also want to put their logo on the report and brand it so that it can be printed (even to a PDF) and stored in their own, internal work flow. Having both their progress observations and the issues they created during that site visit “bundled” in the daily report would be beneficial.

    Thank you!

    Hi Mike

We also need support for open BCF. This is also stopping the adoption of BIM 360. BCF is needed for other project partners who are using non Autodesk products. I am happy to discuss in more detail with you how BCF fits into our co-ordination workflow.

    Hi Mike,
It’s great to have this roadmap! I now have a better understanding of where you’re going with the platform.
I still have a few questions though:
Will it become (or is it already) possible to view the issues/markups/rfi’s that were created within the BIM 360 environment within Revit?
To support design/trade partners that work with non-Autodesk software it would be essential to export issues/markups/rfi’s to the open BCF-format, so they can review them within their own software. Is that something that’s considered to add to the platform in the near future?

      Hi Chris (and Mike)
These exact two issues are why we’re not going with BIM360 on the first release. I most admid that it’s disappointing to see Autodesk doing al this development on BIM360 and not focusing more on integration to the design tools. I’m definately looking forward to these two key-features and then we’ll reconsider moving to BIM360. I very much like the ideas behind BIM360 and it has great potential. Keep up the good work.

Hi – On the diagram we posted on the Roadmap page, Docs is the “Project Data” layer and acts as a foundation for the design, preconstruction, construction and operations workflows in BIM 360. If you upload a model to Docs, you can add markups and comments to it directly – but you could also add an RFI to it from the Project Management module, or run it through clash detection in the model coordination module, or run an inspection checklist on it from Field Management.

The ability to cut sections, or at least manipulate existing sections on a mobile device in Glue still doesn’t rate a mention. I want to ditch Revizto from our tool set,and replace it with Glue, but my users are do not want to lose this function. Glue users have been asking for this since it’s inception but still it appears to lack priority??

      Hi Darrell:

Our BIM 360 Docs iOS app has a section tool. If you don’t have a Docs subscription, you can set up a trial and download the iOS app to check it out. I’d be interested to see if this meets your sectioning needs.

      Thanks,

Is the ability to get the coordinate set from a certain point in the viewer on the road map. This should be possible if the right coordinates are applied to the model in Revit or Civil 3D.

Location “awareness” is a central concept for BIM 360. Getting levels, rooms and coordinates from the model are all part of this concept.

      0

Soooo…. coordinates from the model are a part of this concept. If you take the Layout app aside – how do you then get a random coordinate from the model in the viewer?

    3. mikedavison (Post author)

      0

      0

Assuming we have the real world coordinates for a project (either from the model or from a GPS survey of the project site), we would get the “random coordinate” from some type of GPS device – this could be a phone/tablet device or any GPS sensor – to be able to map the GPS coordinate to the relative location in the viewer.
