Climate change poses severe physical risks to Southeast Asian communities and threatens local economies. Experts estimate that by 2100, unchecked climate change could shrink the region\u2019s gross domestic product (GDP) by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imf.org\/en\/Publications\/fandd\/issues\/2018\/09\/southeast-asia-climate-change-and-greenhouse-gas-emissions-prakash#:~:text=Unchecked%2C%20climate%20change%20could%20shave%2011%20percent%20off%20the%20region%E2%80%99s%20GDP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">up to 11%<\/a>\u2014more than twice the global average.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong><strong><strong>The urgent need for climate innovation in Southeast Asia<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>SEA not only faces the challenge of adapting to climate change but also how to mitigate its increasing emissions. With a population of nearly 690 million, the region\u2019s energy demand has risen by an average of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/southeast-asia-energy-outlook-2022\/key-findings#:~:text=Energy%20demand%20in%20Southeast%20Asia%20has%20increased%20on%20average%20by%20around%203%25%20a%20year%20over%20the%20past%20two%20decades%2C\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">3% annually<\/a> over the past two decades\u2014with coal playing a large part in meeting this demand. The region is home to some of the largest carbon sinks in the world, but these are rapidly being depleted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.deloitte.com\/content\/dam\/Deloitte\/sg\/Documents\/noindex\/sea-risk-southeast-asias-turning-point-report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Deloitte report<\/a> forecasts that climate change-induced economic losses will reduce SEA\u2019s GDP by an average of 7.5% annually through 2070\u2014amounting to more than $28 trillion\u2014but that shifting towards a low-carbon development pathway could add $12.5 trillion to the SEA economy during the same period. Climate innovation investment in the region is increasingly crucial for both mitigating the impacts of climate change and developing the adaptive capacities for people, economies, and environments in SEA and around the globe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Why Wavemaker Impact?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Autodesk Foundation is excited to welcome <a href=\"https:\/\/wavemakerimpact.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wavemaker Impact<\/a> to our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.org\/portfolio#health-and-resilience\">Health &amp; Resilience<\/a> portfolio. Wavemaker Impact (WMi) is Southeast Asia\u2019s first climate tech venture builder, committed to driving large-scale decarbonization efforts in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>WMi has set ambitious impact targets with the goal of reducing global greenhouse gas emissions by 10% by 2035. To achieve this, WMi is actively building a portfolio of ventures focused on SEA\u2019s highest emitting sectors. All WMi portfolio companies align with the fund\u2019s \u2018100&#215;100\u2019 investment strategy, meaning that each company has the potential to reach $100 million in recurring revenue and abate 100 million tons of CO<sub>2<\/sub>e emissions annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Long-term climate resilience and decarbonization requires derisking breakthrough technologies but also scaling up existing solutions that help communities adapt to risks and can immediately reduce CO<sub>2<\/sub>e emissions. Many impactful technologies, however, have seen low adoption rates in low-resource communities. The ventures WMi supports span multiple sectors\u2014including agriculture and food, land use and deforestation, industry and industrial processes, mobility, and energy and the built environment\u2014addressing specific emissions reduction opportunities within each sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To date, WMi has invested in and launched six ventures, with another four currently in development. The firm is on track to finalize its tenth investment by the end of 2023 and is in the process of launching its first companies in India and Australia. Its current portfolio includes: <a href=\"https:\/\/agrosglobal.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Agros<\/a>, a sustainable farming platform for horticulture farmers; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wastex.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WasteX<\/a>, a distributed biochar technology company that sequesters agricultural waste emissions; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rize.farm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rize<\/a>, a platform for farmers to reduce methane emissions in rice cultivation; <a href=\"http:\/\/joinhelios.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Helios<\/a>, Southeast Asia\u2019s first residential solar mortgage company; <a href=\"https:\/\/bumibaru.co\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bumi Baru<\/a>, a degraded land flipping company in Indonesia; and <a href=\"https:\/\/regenx.ag\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">RegenX<\/a>, a regenerative agriculture platform focusing on commodity crops like coffee and cacao.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Our collaboration<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As an Autodesk Foundation portfolio organization, Wavemaker Impact will leverage Autodesk industry knowledge to understand CO<sub>2<\/sub>e emissions reduction opportunities in the built environment and industrial processes.
