It is already having real, life-threatening consequences, especially for the more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cell.com\/one-earth\/fulltext\/S2590-3322(23)00560-2?_returnURL=https%3A%2F%2Flinkinghub.elsevier.com%2Fretrieve%2Fpii%2FS2590332223005602%3Fshowall%3Dtrue\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">one billion people living in informal settlements<\/a> around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In many tropical cities, temperatures are pushed even higher by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cell.com\/one-earth\/fulltext\/S2590-3322(23)00560-2?_returnURL=https%3A%2F%2Flinkinghub.elsevier.com%2Fretrieve%2Fpii%2FS2590332223005602%3Fshowall%3Dtrue\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">urban heat island effect<\/a> and the use of housing materials like tin and cement that trap heat indoors. With limited access to reliable electricity, air conditioning is out of reach for most. In some communities, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/commentaries\/keeping-cool-in-a-hotter-world-is-using-more-energy-making-efficiency-more-important-than-ever\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fewer than 5 percent of households own a cooling device<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For families in these areas, dangerously high indoor temperatures, day and night, are becoming the norm, putting young children, the elderly, and others at heightened risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why RMI?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Autodesk Foundation is proud to welcome the Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) to the Health &amp; Resilience portfolio. RMI\u2019s global climate tech accelerator, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.third-derivative.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Third Derivative<\/a>, has launched an initiative to bring Passive Daytime Radiative Cooling (PDRC) to the communities most impacted by extreme heat. Passive Daytime Radiative Cooling technology refers to materials and surfaces that not only reflect sunlight but also emit heat energy through the atmosphere and out into space in the form of longwave infrared radiation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.autodesk.com\/autodesk-foundation\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/157\/PDRC-Graphic-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1455\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.autodesk.com\/autodesk-foundation\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/157\/PDRC-Graphic-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.autodesk.com\/autodesk-foundation\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/157\/PDRC-Graphic-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.autodesk.com\/autodesk-foundation\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/157\/PDRC-Graphic-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.autodesk.com\/autodesk-foundation\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/157\/PDRC-Graphic-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blogs.autodesk.com\/autodesk-foundation\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/157\/PDRC-Graphic.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-default has-small-font-size\"><em>Image courtesy of RMI<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Considered a \u201cclean\u201d cooling technology, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.third-derivative.org\/blog\/really-cool-roofs-how-breakthrough-materials-can-save\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PDRC have the potential to lower roof surface temperatures by up to 90\u00b0F and indoor air temperatures by as much as 18\u00b0F<\/a> without electricity, with minimal maintenance needs, and at a fraction of the cost of air conditioners. RMI is working to change that. Their plan starts with real-world pilots in informal settlements in India, where not only product performance will be monitored, but also human health In doing so, they are helping to mainstream this technology, support product commercialization and cost reduction through economies of scale (products are currently early in development), and drive affordable adoption where it can have the greatest human impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>The long-term vision is bold: <br>reach 80% of informal and low-income homes in high-heat countries within five years.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe clean energy transition must work for everyone, everywhere \u2014 that means accelerating solutions that deliver both impact and resilience,\u201d said <strong>RMI CEO Jon Creyts<\/strong>. \u201cWith the Autodesk Foundation, we are harnessing the power of innovation and collaboration to create scalable pathways for vulnerable communities most exposed to extreme heat. This is how we unlock a cleaner, more prosperous, and more secure future for all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Our collaboration<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Through our partnership, RMI will explore using Autodesk technology like AutoCAD, Revit, and Insight to accelerate their work in this sector.
