Scientists estimate that around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stateofcdr.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">9 billion tons of CO\u2082<\/a> must be removed annually to meet climate targets. Today, we\u2019re removing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stateofcdr.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">only a fraction of that<\/a>, mostly through conventional methods like reforestation. Reaching the scale required will demand new technologies, broader participation, and more inclusive approaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, smallholder farmers, who grow a third of the world\u2019s food, face mounting threats from climate change. Shifting rainfall patterns, depleted soils, and increased pest pressures are already reducing yields, threatening incomes, and putting local <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s43621-025-01580-4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">food security at risk<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Mati Carbon?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Autodesk Foundation is pleased to support <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mati.earth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mati Carbon<\/a>, a public benefit corp that partners with smallholder farmers to improve soil health, increase crop yields, and permanently remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mati\u2019s approach centers on <a href=\"https:\/\/climate.mit.edu\/explainers\/enhanced-rock-weathering\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW)<\/a>, a natural process where finely crushed basalt is applied to farmland. As the rock reacts with water and atmospheric CO\u2082, it creates stable carbon compounds stored in the soil. At the same time, the process releases essential nutrients that improve soil fertility and support plant health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mati sources basalt dust locally and applies it to farmer fields at no cost. A key aspect of Mati\u2019s solution is developing tailored and scalable Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV) platforms for diverse agro-ecological zones (soil types). In 2024 alone, farmers saw a collective income increase of over $4.5 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Collaboration with the Autodesk Foundation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As Mati scales operations and develops new deployment tools, Autodesk\u2019s in-kind support can help accelerate and refine their processes. By using Autodesk design software, their engineering team can prototype and improve farm equipment more efficiently, reducing cost and development cycles.
