Cloud production, open standards, and machine learning announced at AU 2021\u00a0<\/em>will\u00a0empower artists and creators to meet\u00a0growing\u00a0demand for\u00a0content<\/em><\/p>\n

Demand for streaming content and games\u00a0is\u00a0exploding\u00a0due to the global pandemic, which spurred\u00a0massive changes across the media and entertainment\u00a0(M&E)\u00a0industry.\u00a0Studios were\u00a0scrambling as\u00a0film\u00a0shoots stalled and teams\u00a0were\u00a0confined to their homes.\u00a0The industry\u00a0was\u00a0already\u00a0showing signs of\u00a0moving to\u00a0cloud long term, but\u00a0out of necessity, years of planning turned into weeks of execution. Teams\u00a0connected in the cloud, and production continued from home.<\/p>\n

This shift to the cloud presents\u00a0an\u00a0excellent\u00a0opportunity to do things differently, and to build a more resilient future.\u00a0Autodesk\u2019s\u00a0vision is to help accelerate that transition\u00a0by\u00a0unlocking\u00a0new levels of collaboration, creativity,\u00a0efficiency,\u00a0and\u00a0insights. Today, at Autodesk University (AU) 2021, we\u2019re announcing the ways we\u2019re driving the industry forward through our\u00a0data-fluent\u00a0cloud-based\u00a0workflows\u00a0and industry partnerships.<\/p>\n

Our\u00a0vision aligns with\u00a0the 2030 view of\u00a0production outlined by\u00a0industry think-tank\u00a0MovieLabs.<\/p>\n

Underlying\u00a0our\u00a0vision is a\u00a0foundation\u00a0built on\u00a0open\u00a0standards\u00a0such as USD (Universal Scene Description)\u00a0for 3D\u00a0data exchange,\u00a0and\u00a0OpenColorIO\u00a0for color calibration and management.\u00a0Working with\u00a0customers and the Academy Software Foundation,\u00a0Autodesk is\u00a0actively\u00a0involved\u00a0in helping create\u00a0these standards as well as integrating them into our products to further their adoption.<\/p>\n

Thanks to\u00a0an extensive\u00a0collaboration with Pixar, Animal Logic, Luma Pictures and Blue Sky,\u00a0Autodesk\u00a0is\u00a0helping\u00a0to\u00a0refine\u00a0the multiple\u00a0\u2018flavors\u2019\u00a0of USD into a\u00a0common\u00a0standard, as well as implementing\u00a0support for USD in\u00a0Maya and 3ds Max. USD\u00a0enables artists to load and edit massive datasets at lightning speed, increasing\u00a0pipeline efficiency and\u00a0improving\u00a0collaboration,\u00a0so that\u00a0teams\u00a0can more easily handle the\u00a0high-volume data workloads\u00a0of 3D scenes.<\/p>\n

Cloud-powered workflows increase production speed and creativity<\/strong><\/p>\n

Autodesk\u2019s\u00a0vision\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0cloud spans across industries\u00a0with\u00a0similar challenges\u00a0taking a\u00a0unified approach.\u00a0We\u00a0invested in building an extensive and extensible cloud platform, Autodesk\u00a0Forge<\/a>. Forge will\u00a0provide the capabilities needed, from security to\u00a0scalability,\u00a0for\u00a0us to connect teams to their projects more efficiently than ever before.\u00a0And by\u00a0centralizing on a\u00a0single\u00a0platform,\u00a0we can bring to bear\u00a0more\u00a0research and\u00a0development\u00a0resources\u00a0and expertise\u00a0than would\u00a0be possible\u00a0when\u00a0focusing on a single industry.<\/p>\n

Autodesk is\u00a0also\u00a0investing in the future of M&E, including the\u00a0transition to cloud-based workflows. We are\u00a0building out a new,\u00a0open,\u00a0and secure\u00a0cloud-based environment for M&E production\u00a0on Forge. We are\u00a0investing in our\u00a0industry-leading\u00a0portfolio of\u00a0products,\u00a0Maya,\u00a03ds Max, Flame, and\u00a0ShotGrid, keeping them competitive as we prepare for the transition.<\/p>\n

As\u00a0entertainment\u00a0projects get larger and more complex\u00a0with more\u00a0teams collaborating from disparate locations, it is essential\u00a0that\u00a0producers have an accurate, real-time view of production. An\u00a0upcoming Generative Scheduling\u00a0service\u00a0will enable customers to run projects with smarter business insights powered by Forge. With\u00a0new collaborative review\u00a0capabilities,\u00a0teams can synchronously review material whether they\u2019re in studio or not,\u00a0to streamline review and approvals.<\/p>\n

As Autodesk moves toward production in the cloud,\u00a0we are investing in content creation tools, like\u00a0Bifrost<\/a>\u00a0a\u00a0low-footprint,\u00a0low-code,\u00a0visual programing environment\u00a0for creating\u00a0sophisticated simulations and effects.\u00a0By\u00a0bringing this technology\u00a0to the Forge platform we\u00a0can provide greater performance and\u00a0scalability, new types of services such as simulation wedging,\u00a0as well as future, cloud connected workflows with third-party tools like Unreal Engine, Unity, Blender and Houdini.<\/p>\n

We\u00a0are also investing in AI assisted workflows for media and entertainment. We have recently added several such tools to\u00a0Flame,\u00a0helping\u00a0artists automate\u00a0complex compositing and\u00a0retouching tasks on image sequences. Going forward we will seek\u00a0to combine\u00a0our\u00a0powerful machine learning tools with the massive compute power and scalability of the cloud. This will allow artists\u00a0to\u00a0automate repetitive tasks, work faster and focus on the artistry of their craft.<\/p>\n

The pandemic has also\u00a0led to rapidly growing\u00a0interest in virtual\u00a0production,\u00a0an area Autodesk helped pioneer with\u00a0Joe\u00a0Letteri\u00a0and\u00a0Lightstorm\u00a0Entertainment\u00a0on\u00a0\u201cAvatar.\u201d\u00a0As\u00a0performance\u00a0capture technology becomes more affordable and real-time\u00a0game engines like\u00a0Epic Games\u2019 Unreal Engine\u00a0continue to improve in\u00a0image\u00a0quality,\u00a0virtual production is becoming accessible to a broader range of production\u00a0budgets.<\/p>\n

To\u00a0drive this,\u00a0Autodesk\u00a0is\u00a0partnering with Epic Games to build more robust workflows between our creative products and Unreal Engine. This\u00a0includes\u00a0live-linking\u00a0between our content creation tools,\u00a0as well as\u00a0ShotGrid\u00a0integrations\u00a0to streamline production management\u00a0between virtual production and visual effects.<\/p>\n

Autodesk industry partnerships open new possibilities for artists everywhere<\/strong><\/p>\n

As the M&E industry looks toward the\u00a0future\u00a0of production in the cloud,\u00a0amazing\u00a0new\u00a0opportunities\u00a0to drive innovation and change\u00a0are emerging.\u00a0Our\u00a0customers see\u00a0powerful\u00a0ways in which they can help\u00a0shape the future of the\u00a0industry for the better\u00a0\u2013 and\u00a0we are delighted to help them do so.<\/p>\n

For example, take\u00a0Weta\u00a0Digital, the company behind\u00a0\u201cLord of\u00a0The Rings,\u201d \u201cAvatar,\u201d and \u201cPlanet of the Apes.\u201d\u00a0Autodesk and\u00a0Weta\u00a0recognized the need to\u00a0help artists\u00a0boost creativity and introduced\u00a0WetaM<\/a>, a cloud-based production pipeline toolset that seamlessly integrates with Maya, delivering\u00a0Weta\u2019s\u00a0signature artist tools and next-generation procedural workflows to raise the bar for production for all artists.\u00a0WetaM\u00a0productizes\u00a0Weta\u2019s\u00a0proprietary VFX tools built on Maya\u2019s open\u00a0API, and\u00a0will be commercialized by\u00a0Weta\u00a0Digital as a subscription cloud service.<\/p>\n
