November 2021\u202fis\u202fa watershed moment\u202ffor\u202fincreasing\u202fglobal collaboration\u202fto\u202fpreserve\u202four planet. The\u202f<\/span>26<\/span>th<\/span>\u202fUN Climate Change Conference of the Parties<\/span><\/a>\u202f(COP26) is underway in Glasgow\u202fwith\u202fgovernment officials and private sector leaders\u202fdiscussing\u202faccelerated action\u202fto meet\u202fand exceed the legally\u202fbinding\u202ftargets\u202fof\u202fthe Paris Agreement.\u202fIn parallel with COP26, the\u202f<\/span>Sustainable Innovation Forum<\/span><\/a>\u202f(SIF)\u202fbrings global business leaders, including Autodesk, to\u202fGlasgow to forge the cross-sector partnerships needed to make a net-zero economy a\u202freality.\u202f\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

From an industry perspective, the findings in\u202fthe\u202f<\/span>World Green Building Trends 2021\u202fSmartMarket\u202fReport<\/span><\/a>\u202fare encouraging. The building industry\u2014responsible for\u202fnearly 40%\u202fof greenhouse gas\u202femissions*\u202fannually\u2014is strengthening its commitment to\u202fsustainability.\u202fDodge Data & Analytics surveyed over 1,200 building industry professionals worldwide and\u202ffound that\u202f42% of all respondents expect 60% of their projects to be\u202fgreen buildings by 2024.\u202f\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The concept of \u201cgreen building\u201d includes the planning, design, construction, and operations of buildings with considerations made for energy use, water use, indoor environmental quality, material section and the building’s effects on its site. Green building is not only good for people and the planet\u2013it\u2019s good for business. According to the World Green\u202fBuilding\u202fTrends report,\u202faverage operating cost savings within the first 12 months exceeding 10% and the five-year cost savings exceeding 16%.<\/span>\u202f\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While these findings are promising,\u202fthe industry\u202fmust work together\u202fto accelerate the pace of change\u202fand\u202fleverage technology solutions at scale.\u202fThree clear business strategies, when enabled by technology, can help companies\u202frealize\u202fthe value of sustainability.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now more than ever, the building industry is\u202faddressing the\u202fimpact of the built environment holistically\u202fthrough total carbon management.\u202fThey\u2019re\u202ftaking action to\u202freduce\u202femissions for both operational and embodied carbon. On the operational side, designers and engineers\u202f<\/span>use\u202fenergy modeling<\/span><\/a>\u202fto make choices about lighting, rooflines, building orientation, and other design elements, with the goal of delivering a structure that consumes less energy.\u202fNearly half of respondents in the\u202fgreen building survey said net zero and net positive buildings are the \u201cmost important way to improve the sustainability of the design and construction industry.\u201d\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But for too long,\u202fconversations about\u202f<\/span>net zero<\/span><\/a>\u202fhave focused on\u202fthe energy sources\u202fthat\u202fpower a building. Often overlooked are the emissions generated by the materials used during construction\u2014what\u2019s known as\u202f<\/span>embodied carbon<\/span><\/a>. So\u202fperhaps\u202fmost\u202fencouraging\u202fis\u202fevidence\u202fthat the needle is moving in this category too.\u202fIn the green building report, controlling embodied carbon was ranked the second most important sustainability practice,\u202fwith\u202fone-third of respondents already measuring embodied carbon in their projects.\u202fUntil recently, those\u202fassessments were\u202fnearly impossible. Now, with the\u202f<\/span>Embodied Carbon in Construction Calculator<\/span><\/a>,<\/span>\u202for EC3, designers have a free, open-source tool\u202fthat provides transparency about\u202fthe impact of design and material procurement.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Strategy 2: Resilience\u202f<\/span><\/b>\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Even if the world\u202facts\u202fat COP26 to more aggressively slow greenhouse gas emissions,\u202fclimate change is\u202finevitable. The devastating wildfires, floods, droughts, and hurricanes\u202fwe\u2019ve\u202fall\u202fgrown accustomed to seeing\u00a0on the news will continue.\u202fThe world\u202fneeds\u202fnew and upgraded buildings and systems that can withstand and respond to our changing environment.\u202f\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

About a third of respondents in the green building survey identified resilience as a key climate change strategy, and technology can accelerate\u202fefforts to achieve that goal.\u202fLast month,\u202fAutodesk\u202f<\/span>introduced<\/span><\/a>\u202fcloud-based tools from\u202fInnovyze\u202fand\u202fSpacemaker,\u202fand\u202fa new solution\u202ffrom our partnership with Esri,\u202fto drive\u202fmore\u202fsustainable\u202fand\u202fresilient project outcomes for communities, buildings, and infrastructure.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Europe\u2019s first ever \u201csmart canal\u201d is\u202fanother example of\u202fwhat\u2019s possible\u202fwith technology.\u202fIn an area north\u202fof Glasgow,\u202ffrequent flooding prevented\u202fthe land\u202ffrom being developed for regeneration and economic development.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To solve the seemingly unsolvable,\u202f<\/span>AECOM teamed up with\u202fInnovyze<\/span><\/a>, acquired by Autodesk this year,\u202fto create digital twin technology that mitigates flood risk. Live meteorological forecasting data and sensors enable real-time\u202fsurface water management. When a storm is forecast, the system automatically lowers\u202fcanal water levels\u202fto allow for drainage while keeping the canal navigable.\u202fBy applying innovation to an age-old problem, the city of Glasgow now has a\u202fresilient place to accommodate population growth.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Strategy 3: Circularity<\/span><\/b>\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The third business strategy is\u202f<\/span>circularity<\/span><\/a>, a zero-waste mindset that focuses on the use and reuse of resources. In the context of building design and construction, circularity is emerging as a realistic goal with the rise of\u202f<\/span>building information modeling<\/span><\/a>\u202f(BIM). BIM is more than 3D modeling of a building\u2014it\u2019s an intelligent\u202fprocess for\u202fdocumenting\u202fevery fine detail in a structure\u202fand surrounding area.\u202fWhen\u202feach component\u202fcan\u202fbe\u202ftraced, from the nuts and bolts to\u202fa complete HVAC system,\u202fbuilders\u202fcan disassemble and reuse materials, rather than throwing away the old and\u202fusing\u202flimited natural resources to\u202fcreate\u202fanew.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Every building\u202fcan\u202fbecome a \u201cmaterial bank,\u201d a place that stores valuable materials and components that can be withdrawn and reapplied\u202fat a later day\u202for when the building is no longer viable.\u202fBut to fully realize a circular economy,\u202fa\u202fhigh-functioning\u202fecosystem\u202fis needed\u202fto support the designing, building, buying, and selling\u202fof reusable materials\u202facross a complex network of stakeholders. Circularity is just one example of the importance of cross-industry\u202fpartnerships and\u202fcollaboration in the effort to slow climate change.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Partnering\u202ffor a better future<\/span><\/b>\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The good news is we\u2019re seeing these partnerships forming, growing, and\u202fmaking headway. In September, we joined the\u202f<\/span>World Business Council for Sustainable Development<\/span><\/a>\u202f(WBCSD), a global organization of\u202flarge\u202fcompanies working together to transform our economy to support sustainability.\u202fWe signed the\u202f<\/span>We Mean Business Coalition<\/span><\/a>\u202fletter, along with over 600 businesses, urging G20 and COP26 leaders to go \u201call in\u201d to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius. And we joined our partners in the architecture industry by signing onto to the\u202f<\/span>COP26 Communique<\/span><\/a>, urging specific actions to reduce the impact of\u202fthe\u202fbuilt environment.\u202f\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
