In the past few weeks<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0many<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>major\u00a0<\/span>manufacturers<\/span>\u00a0have\u00a0<\/span>shuttered production<\/span><\/a>\u00a0as global economies come to a halt due to\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0coronavirus<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>As h<\/span>ealthcare systems\u00a0<\/span>operate\u00a0<\/span>past capacity to contain the\u00a0<\/span>crisis,<\/span>\u00a0the disruption in the manufacturing<\/span>\u00a0supply<\/span>\u00a0chain has\u00a0<\/span>added to the stress by creating<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0<\/span>global shortage<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in personal\u00a0<\/span>protective<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>equipment (PPE).\u202f\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>The\u00a0<\/span>Autodesk Technology Centres<\/span><\/a>\u00a0were designed as spaces for exploring new possibilities for making,<\/span>\u00a0so in an effort to support\u00a0<\/span>health<\/span>care<\/span>\u00a0workers<\/span>\u00a0on the frontlines<\/span>, the teams at the centres <\/span>are taking action<\/span>.\u202f\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Utilising <\/span>t<\/span>he<\/span>\u00a0resources available at\u00a0<\/span>Autodesk\u00a0<\/span>workshops in San Francisco, Boston, Toronto, and Birmingham, UK,\u00a0<\/span>technology centre <\/span>members<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>have<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>joined<\/span>\u00a0forces<\/span>\u00a0to help bridge the gap in PPE shortage<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0by\u00a0<\/span>facilitating production of<\/span>\u00a0much<\/span>-needed<\/span>\u00a0face shields<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In Boston, employee volunteers led by technology centre shop staff are using an open-source design to produce a single fold origami-style face shield, laser cut from p<\/span>olyethylene terephthalate\u00a0<\/span>(PET), plus a small\u00a0<\/span>head<\/span>band cut from the same material.\u00a0<\/span>Nearly 5,000 face shields have been donated across 13 medical clinics in the state. \u201cThe feedback I have received from the organisations <\/span>has<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>been positive. Hearing how useful our face shields have been truly\u00a0<\/span>makes<\/span>\u00a0me proud to be a part of this project,\u201d said Joe\u00a0<\/span>Aronis<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0<\/span>workshop manager in Boston.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt was very therapeutic to do something physical with my hands<\/span>\u00a0and see the stack of ready<\/span>\u2013<\/span>to<\/span>\u2013<\/span>ship masks grow and the boxes fill up,\u201d said<\/span>\u00a0volunteer<\/span>\u202fLilli Smith, a\u00a0<\/span>s<\/span>enior\u00a0<\/span>p<\/span>roject\u00a0<\/span>m<\/span>anager<\/span>\u00a0at Autodesk<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A<\/span>t<\/span>\u00a0the technology center in Birmingham, the same open<\/span>\u2013<\/span>source design\u00a0<\/span>is being<\/span>\u00a0used to produce origami<\/span>\u2013<\/span>style face shields<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>with a modification using\u00a0<\/span>V<\/span>elcro<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0To date,\u00a0<\/span>approximately\u00a0<\/span>1,800 face shields have been delivered to the\u00a0<\/span>N<\/span>ational<\/span>\u00a0Health Service<\/span>, with more in production.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In<\/span> Toronto, the technology centre loaned<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>three\u00a0<\/span>Markforged<\/span>\u00a03D printers<\/span>\u00a0to<\/span>\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0resident team<\/span>\u00a0at<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Advanced Perioperative Imaging Lab<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(APIL<\/span>)<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>to produce their version of an open-source visor-style face shield created by medical hardware maker\u00a0<\/span>Glia<\/span><\/a>\u00a0as part of a project with Toronto General Hospital<\/span>\u00a0(TGH)<\/span>. They are\u00a0<\/span>currently<\/span>\u00a0producing between 150-200 face shields per day for medical staff at TGH and other hospitals across the country\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>hope\u00a0<\/span>to ramp<\/span>\u00a0up production with the addition<\/span>al<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>printer<\/span>\u00a0resources<\/span>.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOne thing we\u2019ve been learning quickly, and rather painfully, is how to manage these distributed manufacturing models,<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>said<\/span><\/a>\u00a0Dr. Azad\u00a0<\/span>Mashari<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>chief anaesthesiologist and director at APIL<\/span>.<\/span> \u201cIt\u2019s fairly tractable when you have one organisation volunteering 40 printers or when you have a few large pods like that\u2026 it gets much more complex when many people want to commit\u2026 we don\u2019t yet have a sustainable model for managing a large network of small producers in a system of distributed manufacturing<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d\u202f\u202f\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In San Francisco, the workshop team is 3D<\/span>\u2013<\/span>printing parts for<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>face shield<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0by\u00a0<\/span>Maker Nexus<\/span><\/a>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>a non-profit makerspace community, who\u00a0<\/span>organised the efforts and designed the <\/span>PPE<\/span>\u00a0for easy production.\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>Autodesk has been instrumental in supporting the efforts underway at Maker Nexus, and other maker-spaces across the country, to rapidly produce critically needed <\/span>p<\/span>ersonal\u00a0<\/span>protective<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>e<\/span>quipment for our frontline medical professionals<\/span>,\u201d said Eric Hess,\u00a0<\/span>genera<\/span>l manager<\/span>\u00a0at Maker Nexus.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On site<\/span>\u00a0at the\u00a0<\/span>technology centre <\/span>workshop<\/span>, the team is printin<\/span>g\u00a0<\/span>in<\/span>\u00a0ABS and ASA on the\u00a0<\/span>Stratysys<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Fortus<\/span>\u00a0machines<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>while\u00a0<\/span>offsite, they are\u00a0<\/span>printing with<\/span>\u00a0polyester on\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>Ultimaker<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>More<\/span>\u00a0than\u00a0<\/span>560<\/span>\u00a0face shields will be donated to Bay Area\u00a0<\/span>m<\/span>edical<\/span>\u00a0facilities.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>months<\/span>\u00a0of March<\/span>\u00a0and April<\/span>, the technology centres<\/span>\u00a0have<\/span>\u00a0produced and donated more than\u00a0<\/span>7<\/span>,<\/span>000<\/span>\u00a0units of PPE to\u00a0<\/span>over<\/span>\u00a0a dozen<\/span>\u00a0healthcare facilities<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>with<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>capacity to produce a few thousand more.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u202f<\/span>For most major manufacturers and automated factories in North America, pivoting to\u00a0<\/span>develop<\/span>\u00a0PPE is not an easy switch. There are many factors to consider before changing gears and retooling to be able to produce\u00a0<\/span>these<\/span>\u00a0item<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0in high volumes.\u00a0<\/span>Sunny Sahota<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>a technology centre engagement manager<\/span>\u00a0in San Francisco<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>noted,\u00a0<\/span>\u201cAt a high level, the cost of change for larger manufacturers is quite high, both financially and on labor<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>A lot of it comes down to a company\u2019s ability to prioritise agility in manufacturing.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For the technology centres, produc<\/span>ing<\/span>\u00a0PPE has been possible due to our agile and adaptable environment,\u00a0<\/span>while<\/span>\u00a0navigating such challenges as\u00a0<\/span>office closures, complying to social distancing protocols<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and sourcing material<\/span>s<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe will continue to make face shields to support the need until industry supply chains tool up or we run out of material,\u201d said\u00a0<\/span>Aronis<\/span>. \u201cAt that point, we will see if there are other needs that we could support at the technology centre<\/span>s<\/span>.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
