BIM 360 Docs Update – February 28, 2017

Joan Allen
March 1, 2017

The latest BIM 360 Docs update is packed with highly-requested features such as document-level hyperlinking, improved PDF title block management, the ability to move any document in any folder, a measure tool for 2D drawings and 3D models, and other viewer enhancements. This update also includes an updated iOS app with support for creating and editing RFI’s and download enhancements.

Document Management – Hyperlinking

In January we introduced folder level hyperlinking, and now we have added document level hyperlinks. Links from Issue and RFI notifications, as well as links from the activity log, will navigate directly to the 2D drawing, 3D model, or other project file.  In addition, you can copy the URL and share it to another project team member, providing direct access to the model, drawing, or file (requires the user to have permission to view the document).

Document Management – Project Title Blocks and Cancel

Until now, users uploading PDF drawings to the “Plans” folders were required to define the PDF title blocks at the folder level.  This update includes the highly-requested ability to re-use Title Block definitions across the project.  Once a title block has been defined, it will be available for future uploads of PDF drawings (note – this applies to all Title Blocks created after the February 28 release).  For example, this screenshot shows a title block called “New Title Block” available for an upload to a different folder.

We have also added the ability to cancel a publishing job after the initial upload. This option is available for files in the publish log that either are waiting for the next publish step or that might have failed during processing.

Document Management – Move any document

This update includes the ability to move a document (all versions) from one folder to another, so that you can easily re-organize your project documents without losing any of the critical history and audit trail. This also allows you to upload a multi-page PDF drawing set or a Revit model to a “plans” folder in Docs, and then organize the auto-extracted sheets into discipline-specific folders, such as architectural, mechanical, and structural.

Viewing and Review – Measure and Calibrate; Edit Hyperlinks

In Docs web, you can use the new measure tool to verify dimensions in 2D drawings and 3D models.  For design files (RVT, DWG, and DWF) this tool will automatically display the correct (model-based) measurement data.  It also includes a calibration tool so that you can easily determine dimensions on a PDF drawing once you have set the calibration based on a known dimension on the drawing.

In addition to the automatic callout hyperlinking capabilities for 2D drawings, Docs also provides the ability add manual hyperlinks between drawings.  In this release, we have updated the navigation UX for navigating to the hyperlinked sheet (just tap on the preview image) and we have also added the ability to delete a manually added hyperlink.

Docs Web Usability – Project List

We have improved the usability of the project navigation drop-down menu.  Now the most recently viewed project is listed at the top, with the remainder of the projects listed in alphanumeric order.

Mobile – iOS Version 2.0

The latest IOS app provides the ability to Create new RFI’s and respond to and comment on existing RFI’s.

This update also includes download improvements:  until your chosen folders and documents have downloaded, the app will remain active, ensuring that your downloads will not be interrupted if the device is otherwise inactive.

    Hi Joan,

Is it possible to get a link to the document in the issues overview section? Now i have to manually search the document to find the issue.

And next on the wish list. Automatic title blocks for .rvt files. Why is it possible for pdf and not for a revit file?

    Kind regards,

    Arjan Peeters

    Hi Joan,

Thanks for the update. I would love to see the ability to create the measured dimension in a markup. and the ability to pick the measuring tape from the markup toolbar. Currently the measured dimension is not stored in the markup when adding a markup at he place where I did my measurement.

Please add the ability set the unit type per project/region. a this moment you need to set the units on every drawing.

    Kind regards,

    Frank Pepping

    Hi Jonathan,

To support your workflow, I recommend using the “Copy” function for organizing subsequent versions of a document into another folder.  The Copy function was specifically designed to support adding a version from another folder.  Because the sheet numbers match, they will version automatically.  Then you just need to delete the copied document from the original folder.

    Hi Kenny –

Thanks for the feedback!  We do plan to provide a “share link” function and mobile support in a future update.  We also plan to add “measure” to the mobile apps in a future update.

The update with moving files into discipline specific folders doesn’t allow any further version control. Uploading the next version of a Revit model will dump all the sheets into the parent folder, the 3D view will version as the latest, the sheets will upload as version 1 and can’t be then moved into the discipline specific folders as they already contain a file with the same name. This will make it confusing to track the latest version of sheets.

This is really great! Thank you all for the consistent & valuable updates!

The individual links to sheets are an amazing improvement! It would be great to see “Share” functionality on the apps that opens up a share card and allows team members to easily share the link through email, text, slack, etc. We’d also like to see these links open directly in app when accessed on mobile devices (rather than in the mobile web browser).

Also, do you see the measurement tools coming to mobile applications in the future?

    great enhancements, thank you!
