BIM 360 Release Notes

BIM 360 Docs Search and Filter Enhancements for New Projects – September 23, 2020

Audrey Boguchwal
September 23, 2020

With the latest BIM 360 Docs release, new BIM 360 projects have enhanced search and filter features in document management.

In Plans, Projects Files and any sub folders, Docs users may now:

  • Filter to view folders only, documents only, or both
  • Filter by current file versions
  • Search and then filter search results by folders, documents and current versions

In Project Files and its subfolders, Docs users may additionally:

  • Filter folders by file type (e.g. .pdf, .xls, .dwf, etc.)
  • Filter search results by file type

On BIM 360 Documents Management, click the filter icon to the right of the search bar to reveal the filter options. Use the dropdown menus to filter folders without searching, or filter after a search to narrow the results.

Please note: these features are not available on BIM 360 projects created before September 23, 2020.

I just had the case where I needed to filter on custom attributes in Docs folder, but found out that this function only works on recent projects (These filters are only available for projects created after September 23, 2020.)

It’s very anoying because allmost all construction projects take at least 2 years, so it takes quite a while before all our projects can profit from enhancements. There should be a kind of ‘update’ possibility for existing projects.

Is there an ETA for the implementation in all projects ?

FYI – It lauched it as an IDEA as Autodesk Support asked me to in a support case. So please vote …

In fact it’s not an IDEA, its a MUST !

Thanks for your feedback. We are actively working on bringing the September and March release search features to all BIM 360 Docs projects.

Guys… thanks for update, is an important one, but honestly, I am extremely disappointed. First and foremost because this is a basic feature I took for granted and to which we don’t access access in our current projects (older than Sep 2020). Second, because I cannot filter by Attributes and I always thought the entire point of getting attributes was to filter them… Please implement these asap, is paramount.

It is now January 2021 and the search function is completely broken in our project. We cannot use search, cannot use filters… What’s the use of a cloud platform if the new features are not made available for existing projects? Other improvements are still appearing.

And filtering without supporting custom attributes makes the Attributes feature almost useless… Every webshop provides such functionality. We migrated from another platform and the users expect such basics to be in-place.

Thank you for your feedback. The Search features mentioned in this post are for projects created after September 23, 2020, so they would not be expected to work in projects created prior to that date. As stated previously, we are actively working on a migration to bring these features – and more – to existing projects.

Is there any update around the search function on projects before 23th september?

  5. Avatarlarodrigueza21

Is it possible to filter custom attributes?

    1. AvatarAudrey Boguchwal (Post author)

Thank you for your question. Currently, it is not possible to filter on custom attributes and their values, but we are actively working on that functionality.

  6. AvatarT.vanBeem

Nice update, but we also like to have these functionalities on current projects.

Are you also busy with mandatory Field, otherwise you cannot filter 100% completely

    1. Avatarlarodrigueza21

Totally agree. The current projects have lots of information and we should be allow to use the upgrades of the app

If projects created before September 23rd 2020 are migrated to a newer version of Revit (using Revit Cloud Model Upgrade), will this search function become available after the update?

    1. AvatarAudrey Boguchwal (Post author)

No, migration to a new version of Revit is unrelated to the search features as they are part of BIM 360 Docs.

  8. AvatarJAVE_CAD

Too bad that this new option of filtering only applies to new projects created after September 23rd. We have long project turnaround times and therefore create relatively few new projects.

  9. AvatarAudrey Boguchwal (Post author)

We are so pleased by your positive feedback.

We are actively working on bringing these new search features to BIM 360 projects created before September 23, 2020. The new features leverage new technology and we must migrate existing project data to use them, so we cannot currently comment on release timing.

    1. AvatarMarty_

These new features are welcome, although it is unfortunate that they are not yet available to existing projects created prior to September 23. Can you advise how the migration of existing project data will work – will projects be updated in small batches over a specific time period? will there be notification to admins in advance of a project being updated?

    2. AvatarAudrey Boguchwal (Post author)

We are still working on the migration and communication plans and will share more when they are ready.

  10. AvatarjaymieJE9WL

This is a great feature. It would be good to also allow users to filter custom attributes as well! Is this on the roadmap? Thanks

    1. AvatarAudrey Boguchwal (Post author)

Yes, we are actively working on custom attribute filtering. We will share more when that functionality is released.

    2. Avatarlarodrigueza21

And please make those changes available for previous projects. Actual customers are whom had ask for it, and when you get the goal we are excluded. Not good.

  11. Avatarpranav.parikh@mnc5d.com

Are these features not available to projects created before 23th September, permanently ?

  12. AvatarJonathan_Hand

Love these new features but so disappoined that its not available on any project before Sep 23

    1. Avatarc.kruit

Agree. Why not in previous projects available?
