This guide summarizes the essential tools and features used in the demo video below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"1080\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 1920 \/ 1080;\" width=\"1920\" controls src=\"https:\/\/blogs.autodesk.com\/forma\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/163\/Quick-Start-Add-you-first-building-to-an-existing-site-1.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h_2f8f348ef8\"><strong>Before you start<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Set a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/help.autodeskforma.com\/en\/articles\/12816830-quick-start-create-your-first-site#h_4f8daa2eba\">site limit<\/a><\/strong> to define the area where you&#8217;ll design and run analyses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Optional: Click the <strong>settings<\/strong> gear cog in the lower-left corner to select <strong>metric<\/strong> or <strong>imperial<\/strong> measurement units.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h_72c9f0c507\"><strong>Base editing<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your <strong>base<\/strong> represents your site environment and includes all the contextual data in your map area.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Double-click any element in your <strong>base<\/strong> to enter <strong>base editing mode<\/strong> and adjust, add, or remove contextual elements. This mode is defined by a purple frame around your <strong>canvas<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h_1000577615\"><strong>Design toolbar<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the starting point to draw and edit volumes on your site, such as <strong>buildings<\/strong>, <strong>landscaping<\/strong>, <strong>limits<\/strong>, <strong>transportation<\/strong>, and <strong>generic objects<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Basic building<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Find this tool under the <strong>buildings<\/strong> category or use the shortcut: &#8221; B &#8220;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Choose from four options to shape your model: <strong>freeform<\/strong>, <strong>cube<\/strong>, <strong>cylinder<\/strong>, or <strong>trace an existing shape<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your selection enables you to draw a 2D footprint and pull it into a 3D volume of your desired height.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The building will automatically divide into floors with a default height of 3m (about 9\u201910\u201d), which you can easily modify afterwards.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Move<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This tool allows you to move selected 2D and 3D geometry in any direction on your <strong>canvas<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Pro tip: Move objects freely or press <strong>Tab<\/strong> to toggle between move parameters and type your desired distance.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h_074f6029ba\"><strong>Right panel<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Area metrics:<\/strong> View key numerical insights into your proposal, such as <strong>site area<\/strong>, <strong>building coverage area<\/strong>, <strong>gross floor area<\/strong>, and <strong>rentable area<\/strong>. The numbers update dynamically as you develop your proposal.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Building:<\/strong> Adjust the values for the <strong>number of stories<\/strong>, <strong>story height<\/strong>, <strong>width<\/strong>, and <strong>length<\/strong> for selected volumes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Functions:<\/strong> Tag your building or selected floors with different purposes, which reflect in the breakdown of your <strong>gross floor area<\/strong> and <strong>rentable area<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h_942e6a5f62\"><strong>Visibility and orientation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Toggle between <strong>2D<\/strong> and <strong>3D view<\/strong> in the bottom-right corner for fast navigation and comfortable modeling.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h_0c354c1a9f\"><strong>Pro tips<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Hover over an edge with your cursor to activate snapping guidelines, which help with precise parallel or perpendicular alignment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Press the <strong>spacebar<\/strong> to instantly repeat the last tool you used.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Now your model is ready for <a href=\"https:\/\/help.autodeskforma.com\/en\/articles\/7870444-how-to-run-quick-site-studies#h_d10a783c58:~:text=main%20design%20tools-,Video%203%3A%20How%20to%20analyze%20proposals%20and%20compare%20them%20visually,-All%20Collections\">analysis<\/a>!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is the second article in our Quick Start learning series.
