They&#8217;re often looking for easier tools to quickly model detailed buildings and play with more design options. As an architect myself, I can definitely relate!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We invite architects into&nbsp;the&nbsp;development&nbsp;process&nbsp;from the&nbsp;very beginning&nbsp;continuing&nbsp;as&nbsp;the product takes&nbsp;shape&nbsp;until launch&nbsp;and after launch. The&nbsp;collaboration starts long before&nbsp;a single&nbsp;feature&nbsp;is even mapped out. In the earliest stages,&nbsp;it\u2019s&nbsp;about listening and having open conversations that help us understand the&nbsp;challenges&nbsp;about&nbsp;what gets in the way&nbsp;of their work.&nbsp;Instead of pitching features, we ask open questions:&nbsp;What\u2019s&nbsp;hardest about this workflow today?&nbsp;Where&nbsp;do existing tools&nbsp;cause bottlenecks? This sketch&nbsp;emerged&nbsp;during a discussion of different strategies for designing effectively from both \u201cinside-out\u201d and \u201coutside-in\u201d perspectives.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When testing&nbsp;early prototypes and more mature features&nbsp;later,&nbsp;we ask them to complete&nbsp;specific tasks&nbsp;based on what we want to test.&nbsp;For example,&nbsp;does the workflow make sense when&nbsp;you&nbsp;start&nbsp;designing&nbsp;the facade&nbsp;in parallel with the interior layout (inside-out vs outside-in)&nbsp;or&nbsp;create&nbsp;apartment layouts&nbsp;to meet unit mix requirements.&nbsp;In a later stage of testing,&nbsp;we\u2019ll&nbsp;set a&nbsp;fun&nbsp;design competition&nbsp;that combines&nbsp;a series of tasks&nbsp;resembling&nbsp;their design workflows&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;more on that in another blog post.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.autodesk.com\/forma\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/163\/Forma-Building-Design_whiteboard-sketch-2-1024x473.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1714\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.autodesk.com\/forma\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/163\/Forma-Building-Design_whiteboard-sketch-2-1024x473.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.autodesk.com\/forma\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/163\/Forma-Building-Design_whiteboard-sketch-2-300x139.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.autodesk.com\/forma\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/163\/Forma-Building-Design_whiteboard-sketch-2-768x355.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.autodesk.com\/forma\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/163\/Forma-Building-Design_whiteboard-sketch-2-1536x710.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blogs.autodesk.com\/forma\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/163\/Forma-Building-Design_whiteboard-sketch-2.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>During testing,&nbsp;it\u2019s&nbsp;important to communicate&nbsp;to users&nbsp;that there are never any wrong answers!&nbsp;In many cases, learning what&nbsp;<em>does not<\/em>&nbsp;resonate with&nbsp;them&nbsp;is even more valuable for us than hearing feedback&nbsp;about something that partially works.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<br>What\u2019s interesting&nbsp;is&nbsp;that&nbsp;people&nbsp;don\u2019t&nbsp;have to be vocal&nbsp;to give feedback. Visual clues in&nbsp;their expression and body language&nbsp;are just as important. When someone&nbsp;lights up&nbsp;immediately, this&nbsp;tells us&nbsp;that they understood the feature.&nbsp;Confusion,&nbsp;hesitation, a  neutral expression points us to&nbsp;areas for&nbsp;improvement \u2013 as&nbsp;mentioned,&nbsp;often&nbsp;negative or neutral&nbsp;signals&nbsp;tell us more than&nbsp;ambiguous positive reactions.
