reality for charity &#8211; Part 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Occasionally I like to get involved in a little charity hobby project so I can use our software in the real world, rather than just against standard datasets that we use for presentations.<\/p>\n<p>Also I like to use the latest survey and scanning equipment out there.<\/p>\n<p>This year it is the turn of the Polish Scouts here in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>They have a site they use for camping which needs some improvements and TLC to make it easier to access and a venue for other schools to use.<\/p>\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<p>So I started first with a scanning exercise of the site and a level of survey control.<\/p>\n<p>So I borrowed a Faro Focus from the UK team (Neil Barnett and David Southam).<\/p>\n<p>It was nice and easy to use with little setup, (even controlling it from my phone).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.faro.com\/en-gb\/products\/3d-surveying\/laser-scanner-faro-focus-3d\/overview?ext_cid=ef.aw.pr.ls.uk.hp.ls&amp;gclid=CKmkxZrqsLwCFVDLtAodN2sAPw\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/faro.blob.core.windows.net\/sitefinity\/header-pictures\/beautyimagefaro3dpicture.png?sfvrsn=33\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<p>Also for some survey GPS points, Topcon (Andrew Evans) gave me access to a GNSS HiPer II and Tesla logger.&#160; Again, minutes to get myself up and running.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.topconpositioning.com\/products\/gnss\/receivers\/hiper-ii\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.topconpositioning.com\/sites\/default\/files\/product_HiPer_II_inset.png\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"www.topconpositioning.com\/products\/hand-held-devices\/field-controllers\/tesla\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.topconpositioning.com\/sites\/default\/files\/product_Tesla_hybrid.png\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I collected the scans on site (17 in this case)<\/p>\n<p>Registered them together in Recap Pro, yes you can do external registrations also not just buildings.&#160;<\/p>\n<p>You just need some hard edges and corners for the software to recognise.&#160; Also here you can combine the survey points, so that the results are located correctly against your coordinate system.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/fromthegroundup.typepad.com\/.a\/6a01127918d1ef28a401a511632a88970c-pi\"><img title=\"RecapPro_index\" width=\"484\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Not bad results for the five minute scan setting that I used on the Faro Focus<\/p>\n<p><a now share these scans with anyone with a web browser<\/p>\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<p>I also then combined the scan data in AutoCAD Civil 3D by bringing in the collected GPS points for key areas<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/fromthegroundup.typepad.com\/.a\/6a01127918d1ef28a401a511632b0e970c-pi\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"AutoCAD_Align\" border=\"0\" height=\"302\" src=\"http:\/\/fromthegroundup.typepad.com\/.a\/6a01127918d1ef28a401a511632b13970c-pi\" style=\"border: 0px\" title=\"AutoCAD_Align\" width=\"484\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As the site is in a planning stage, using this data as context for the layouts that they are exploring is simple using InfraWorks against the mapping, aerial photography etc.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/fromthegroundup.typepad.com\/.a\/6a01127918d1ef28a401a73d6e8fdd970d-pi\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"InfraWorks_Results\" border=\"0\" height=\"292\" src=\"http:\/\/fromthegroundup.typepad.com\/.a\/6a01127918d1ef28a401a73d6e8fea970d-pi\" style=\"border: 0px\" title=\"InfraWorks_Results\" width=\"484\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Not too bad for three hours on site and about 30 minutes back in the office.<\/p>\n<p>A big thanks to the vendors here for loan of the equipment.<\/p>\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<p>In part 2 of this blog I get into more detail with a topographical survey.<\/p>\n<p>(other survey and scanning equipment are available and work well with Autodesk technologies, these are just what were made available to me for this
