Brews & BIM reception

Autodesk Workshop & Sessions



Introduction to InfraWorks (60 min)

Tuesday, 8:30 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. (note this actually starts at 9:00 a.m.), Room #5 

Subject matter experts will walk you through exploring conceptual design for your project anywhere in the world. This would include building a model, creating multiple design options and tips and tricks for taking this to detailed design. Attendees will leave this session with an Autodesk InfraWorks model of their project for use, and a trial of InfraWorks that can be accessed from any computer for 30 days after the date of that class.

Mobile mapping for the Masses (120 min)

Tuesday, 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m., Room #5

Mobile mapping for the masses –  As reality capture continues to evolve, the barriers between foundation software crumble and software on your system today can be used for dynamic mapping. This session will demonstrate the capabilities of using traditional static scanning software, Cyclone, Cloudworx, 3D Reshaper, InfraWorks and others, for processing, feature extraction and publication of Mobile Mapping Data. We will also examine multiple collection platforms and how the data is all tied together. Point Clouds are a very important component in current infrastructure projects and it is vital to know how to handle them for successful project execution. This class will provide all the necessary information to import, process, and extract information from point cloud data in Autodesk AEC products. More specifically, this class will teach surface/terrain generation from high resolution point cloud data in InfraWorks and demonstrate how use it in Civil 3D. The class will also cover how to extract breaklines from point cloud with utmost accuracy and take them to Civil3D for detailed design.

Drones to Virtual Reality (120 min)

Wednesday, 9:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., Room #5

This session will focus on taking reality capture and modeling to the masses. You’ll learn:

  • How to use Autodesk Recap to turn drone photography into 3D point clouds and meshes
  • How to place that 3D model in the larger project context with Autodesk InfraWorks
  • How to publish 3D panoramas using the cloud to make your project accessible via options like Google Cardboard or even in a web browser.



Transportation Information modeling and the perfect case study

Rusty Steel, CEC Corporation & Anthony Echelle, Oklahoma DOT, Tuesday 4:30 p.m., Room #1

In the class we will follow the cyclical AEC Collection flow of products to produce the all encompassing product for our client and the public. We start with InfraWorks for Planning and Studying purposes. Then we move to a survey Mobile LiDAR in using ReCAP and InfraWorks. Next we finalize our InfraWorks conceptual for presentation purposes to win the job. At that point we use a combination of Civil 3D and Infraworks to meet by weekly with a team of a few dozen key engineering personnel. As the design moves to preliminary plans and prepares for the public meeting the InfraWorks model has transformed into a graphical representation of the precise design in Civil 3D that is pleasing on the eye and mind of the general public. This includes animations for InfraWorks done in 3DS Max. We will touch on preparing VR for the public meeting, game like public interaction with the project, and other ideas. The project preps for AMG at submittal time while always synced with InfraWorks.

The Augmented and Virtual Reality brought to life

Dan Iliyn, David Evans and Associates, Inc., Wednesday 9:00 a.m., Room #3

This is an Oregon DOT related project. We reveal how augmented reality (AR) creates unparalleled context for the design and coordination of multidisciplinary civil design projects. Learn how your favorite tablet can become a powerful site coordination and communication portal unlike any other we have had before. Dive in with us to understand how existing conditions data aids the effectiveness of augmented reality and what that looks like. The presentation will use Autodesk InfraWorks to show case how real clients, stakeholders and design teams have benefited from this new design accessibility tool.  We will show the workflow for taking a fully developed InfraWorks model and utilizing augmented reality to view the model on-site via a table or a smart phone.  The presentation will focus on an actual transportation project that utilized InfraWorks and augmented reality to clearly demonstrate a project design to the client and stakeholders both in the office and on the site.

3D Engineered Model Use by Transportation Constructors

Eric Cylwik, Sundt Construction, Tuesday 3:30 p.m., Room #3

Starting from an engineering model and utilizing a construction-focused toolkit within AutoCAD Civil 3D, Sundt Construction leverages engineering models for quantities, survey/layout, and machine guidance. Shown on real-world projects, the toolkit allows fast and easy access to and subdivision of quantities and 3D data. This information flows directly into estimates and machine controls once construction begins. Reducing QTO and survey time enables contractor to focus on constructability and adding value
