Remote Access to Desktop Software Extends Mobility for Designers and Engineers

This summer Autodesk introduced a new technology called Autodesk Remote for its Subscription customers in North America. Now, the company is rolling it out broadly to Autodesk Subscription customers worldwide.

Building on streaming technology from OTOY, Autodesk Remote allows users to drive Autodesk software installed on their primary computer from a remote PC or iPad, utilizing its full power in their 3D design and modeling work regardless of the device. Compatible with more than 30 Autodesk products, Autodesk Remote is available at no additional cost through Autodesk Exchange or via an iPad app on the App Store in 155 countries.

And Autodesk Remote desktop sharing sessions are not limited to Autodesk software. The new software allows remote work with compatible third party software as well, such as the Microsoft Office Suite or Adobe products.

This capability is a huge step in giving customers even more ways to access to powerful 3D design tools, from anywhere, anytime and with any device. Autodesk customer surveys demonstrate demand for this capability:

“I should be able to use the software that I already own, wherever I want.”

“I want to leave the office and pick up where I left off at home.”

How does it work?  Autodesk Remote allows a user to access their already owned Autodesk software from another PC or an iPad with extremely low latency and maximum mobility. They can use it anywhere.  Remote has two components:

  1. A PC host application allows users to remote their desktop to another desktop
  2. A mobile App to allow users to use their software on a iPad, which is optimized for use with Autodesk Inventor Digital Prototyping software

Autodesk Remote is unique from other market alternatives in a few ways:

  • High-speed compression and streaming technology encodes data faster than traditional remote-desktop solutions to provide a better user experience.
  • Cloud-based user authentication and operation eliminates the need for installation, saving time for designers who use multiple devices frequently.
  • Desktop design workflow connects directly to a user’s own remote PC to open, modify, and save designs using their familiar workflow, without the need for multiple installations and updating data sets.
