Over the last 100+ years, we&#8217;ve seen dramatic improvements in the design of gear such as bicycles, in terms of weight, materials, aerodynamics and more.<\/p>\n<p>Now with algorithmically driven <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CtYRfMzmWFU\">generative design<\/a>, we are at the cusp of a revolution in sports equipment design and manufacture.\u00a0Human designers work with computers to define design constraints and objectives, then get back thousands of sometimes otherworldly design options that meet the specified requirements.<\/p>\n<p>What might this look like \u2026<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2026 for athletic shoes?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.autodesk.com\/inthefold\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2016\/08\/Shoes.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1641\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1641\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.autodesk.com\/inthefold\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2016\/08\/Shoes-1024x538.jpg\" alt=\"Shoes\" width=\"640\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.autodesk.com\/inthefold\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2016\/08\/Shoes-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.autodesk.com\/inthefold\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2016\/08\/Shoes-300x158.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.autodesk.com\/inthefold\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2016\/08\/Shoes-768x403.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.autodesk.com\/inthefold\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2016\/08\/Shoes.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Mid 19<sup>th<\/sup> century running shoes were essentially leather slips with hard rubber soles, shown in the top left corner. Canvas shoes with softer rubber soles started to appear around the dawn of the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century, and by the 1960s, shoes looked like the pair shown in the bottom left corner, which were worn\u00a0by world class runner Arthur Keily.<\/p>\n<p>Athletic shoe innovation took off in the 70s and 80s as major manufacturers aimed to create better fit while reducing weight and increasing comfort. By 2016, rhe UA Architech launched with a 3D-printed, generatively designed sole for cushioning and support; in the near future generative design could lead to mass customization of athletic footwear based on the shape of an Olympian\u2019s foot and the specific performance needs of their sport<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2026 for bicycles?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.autodesk.com\/inthefold\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2016\/08\/Bicycle.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1632\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1632 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.autodesk.com\/inthefold\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2016\/08\/Bicycle-e1470257229143-1024x388.jpg\" alt=\"Bicycle\" width=\"640\" height=\"243\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.autodesk.com\/inthefold\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2016\/08\/Bicycle-e1470257229143-1024x388.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.autodesk.com\/inthefold\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2016\/08\/Bicycle-e1470257229143-300x114.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.autodesk.com\/inthefold\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2016\/08\/Bicycle-e1470257229143-768x291.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.autodesk.com\/inthefold\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2016\/08\/Bicycle-e1470257229143.jpg 1149w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Cycling has been a mainstay in modern global competitions, and the sport leapt forward in the late 1800s and early 1900s with the advent of gearing and derailleurs.\u00a0In the 1980s, rear gear clusters began being built with more cogs, resulting in a greater number of speeds available to riders.<\/p>\n<p>Modern day bikes are all about aerodynamics and lightweight components, often featuring deep-dish or disc wheels that reduce drag.\u00a0A generative design tool such as <a href=\"https:\/\/autodeskresearch.com\/projects\/dreamcatcher\">Autodesk Dreamcatcher<\/a> could produce outside-the-box, lightweight frame geometries that are strengthened by internal lattice structures; this bike looks fast!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2026 for recurve archery bows?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.autodesk.com\/inthefold\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2016\/08\/Archery.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1629\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1629\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.autodesk.com\/inthefold\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2016\/08\/Archery-1024x538.jpg\" alt=\"Archery\" width=\"640\" height=\"336\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Recurve bows feature long arms and a single string.
