Our industries are changing in ways both large and small. This week, we find ourselves focused on considerate robots, courageous architecture, and the calculus of success for small manufacturers.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Sort, select, assemble. <\/strong>The dirty little secret about industrial robots today is that they\u2019re pretty dumb\u2014change one variable on the assembly line and everything goes to hell. Fast Company introduces us to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/3047927\/exclusive-inside-autodesks-robotics-lab-of-the-future\">BrickBot<\/a>, developed at Autodesk\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/pier-9\">Pier 9<\/a> facility, that can evaluate components (in this case, Legos), make decisions on the fly, and put them together in a flexible, responsive way. Hello, future of manufacturing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" title=\"What Is Brickbot? Video\" src=\"https:\/\/fast.wistia.net\/embed\/iframe\/96x2t5wu4m?dnt=1#?secret=1fI0PZBjTD\" data-secret=\"1fI0PZBjTD\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Powerful architecture. <\/strong>A data center that provides energy and heat for the community around it? That\u2019s the kind of thinking behind the Powerhouse Standard developed by Norwegian firms Sn\u00f8hetta, Skanska, and other partners, <a href=\"https:\/\/nordic.businessinsider.com\/these-stunning-buildings-by-snohetta-are-norways-next-generation-environmental-architecture--net-energy-positive-from-construction-to-demolition--\">according to Business Insider<\/a>. And that\u2019s just the kind of thinking the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aecexcellence.com\/\">AEC Excellence Awards<\/a> were created to recognize. Judges have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geospatialworld.net\/news\/world-renowned-judges-announced-for-aec-excellence-awards-2018\/\">just been announced for this year\u2019s awards<\/a>\u2014maybe it\u2019s time to submit your project? Hurry, though, entries are due by July 31.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Small and soft to the touch. <\/strong>If you still picture robots as large metal monstrosities or Arnold Schwarzenegger, get with the times. Two new projects show that robots can be great <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/cockroach-robots-rolls-royce\/\">when they\u2019re tiny<\/a> (via Futurism) and also when they\u2019re gentle\u2014and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/science\/2018\/07\/news-rad-sampler-soft-robotics-marine-deep-sea-biology\/\">based on origami<\/a> (via NatGeo).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"See a New Robot That Captures Sea Creatures\u2014Gently | National Geographic\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wDjX26jFzH4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Location, location, location. <\/strong>Sure, it\u2019s important for retailers and restaurants, but also, as it turns out, for small manufacturers (which are 94% of all manufacturers in the U.S).
