Gears don\u2019t generate the same level of excitement and appreciation as, say, a shiny new smart phone with a built-in fingerprint scanner, but maybe they should.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s hardly a person on the planet that doesn\u2019t directly or indirectly benefit from gears on a daily basis. If you rode a bus, train or car to get to work today, a series of gears turned those wheels. Did you flip on a light switch or heat your home today? The energy might have been harvested by gear-heavy equipment such as wind turbines or oil rigs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.itamco.com\/index.html\">ITAMCO<\/a>, based in Plymouth, Indiana, is one of the most unique gear shops in the world, delivering precision machined components to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) that serve a wide array of industries \u2013 ranging from oil and gas and renewable energy, to mining and construction and aerospace and defense.<\/p>\n<p>ITAMCO has been named the January <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/adskinventor\">Inventor of the Month<\/a> for using <a href=\"http:\/\/usa.autodesk.com\/digital-prototyping\/\">Autodesk Digital Prototyping<\/a> tools \u2014 including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/autodesk-inventor-family\/overview\">Autodesk Inventor<\/a> 3D design software as part of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/suites\/product-design-suite\/overview\">Autodesk Product Design Suite<\/a>, along with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/suites\/factory-design-suite\/overview\">Autodesk Factory Design Suite<\/a> \u2014 to better serve its customers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe more precisely manufactured a gear is, the better it will perform,\u201d said Joel Neidig, Technology Manager at ITAMCO. \u201cUsing Inventor software for our design and manufacturing processes makes it possible for us to manufacture gears to sub-micron tolerances, which is .00004 inches. That\u2019s very precise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This level of precision satisfies even the most demanding customers \u2013 like NASA, which used some of ITAMCO\u2019s gears on the mechanical arm that built the international space station. Or the Department of Defense, which uses ITAMCO\u2019s gears on some of its land-based satellite systems.<\/p>\n<p>ITAMCO\u2019s operations have also been significantly enhanced by Factory Design Suite, which allows users to digitally optimize a factory layout before it\u2019s completed. This digital exploration came in handy when the company ordered a colossal piece of machinery that can produce gears up to 13 feet in diameter and that weigh as much as 80,000 pounds.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"asset-img-link\" href=\"http:\/\/inthefold.autodesk.com\/.a\/6a017c3334c51a970b01a3fcac195f970b-pi\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Screen Shot 1\" border=\"0\" class=\"asset  asset-image at-xid-6a017c3334c51a970b01a3fcac195f970b image-full img-responsive\" src=\"http:\/\/inthefold.autodesk.com\/.a\/6a017c3334c51a970b01a3fcac195f970b-800wi\" title=\"Screen Shot 1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"asset-img-link\" href=\"http:\/\/inthefold.autodesk.com\/.a\/6a017c3334c51a970b01a73d672bad970d-pi\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Gearing-2\" border=\"0\" class=\"asset  asset-image at-xid-6a017c3334c51a970b01a73d672bad970d image-full img-responsive\" src=\"http:\/\/inthefold.autodesk.com\/.a\/6a017c3334c51a970b01a73d672bad970d-800wi\" title=\"Gearing-2\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The gigantic gear grinder arrived in 11 different crates, each weighing more than 20,000 pounds. With Factory Design Suite, the company was able to conduct careful analysis and simulation of the entire machine <em>virtually<\/em> before physically assembling and installing it on site, preventing costly mistakes and factory layout revisions.
