{"id":668,"date":"2013-12-05T11:35:00","date_gmt":"2013-12-05T11:35:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.autodesk.com\/inthefold\/2013\/12\/05\/exploring-the-new-industrial-revolution\/"},"modified":"2013-12-05T11:35:00","modified_gmt":"2013-12-05T11:35:00","slug":"exploring-the-new-industrial-revolution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.autodesk.com\/inthefold\/exploring-the-new-industrial-revolution\/","title":{"rendered":"Exploring the New Industrial Revolution"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the second of two Innovation Forums at Autodesk University 2013, five speakers explored the New Industrial Revolution and how technologies such as additive manufacturing, 3d and 4d printing, advanced robotics, the maker movement and bio-driven design that are rapidly changing how the world around us is designed and fabricated.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a class=\"asset-img-link\" href=\"http:\/\/inthefold.autodesk.com\/.a\/6a017c3334c51a970b019b0233b207970d-pi\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"1\" border=\"0\" class=\"asset  asset-image at-xid-6a017c3334c51a970b019b0233b207970d image-full img-responsive\" src=\"http:\/\/inthefold.autodesk.com\/.a\/6a017c3334c51a970b019b0233b207970d-800wi\" title=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The session was hosted by Jen McCabe, Hardware Sorceress for the Downtown Project and Vegas Tech Fund, who spoke about the impact of crowdsourcing and crowd funding, now, \u201ca viable way to start and grow a new hardware business.\u201d&#160;&#160; She used the example of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kano.me\">Kano<\/a>, a $99 build-yourself computer that has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/alexklein\/kano-a-computer-anyone-can-make\">attracted over 9000 backers on KIckstarter<\/a> and which she plans to build with her five year old nice as a Christmas gift as an example of this trend.&#160;<\/p>\n<p>&#160; <a class=\"asset-img-link\" href=\"http:\/\/inthefold.autodesk.com\/.a\/6a017c3334c51a970b019b023332c3970b-pi\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"2\" border=\"0\" class=\"asset  asset-image at-xid-6a017c3334c51a970b019b023332c3970b image-full img-responsive\" src=\"http:\/\/inthefold.autodesk.com\/.a\/6a017c3334c51a970b019b023332c3970b-800wi\" title=\"2\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ben Kaufman, CEO of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.quirky.com\">Quirky<\/a>, spoke about their efforts to change the product development and launch process.&#160; \u201cThe best ideas come from the living room,\u201d he said, and cited examples of Jake Zien and his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.quirky.com\/shop\/44-Pivot-Power-Flexible-Power-Strip\">pivot power<\/a> invention, to which over 700 Quirky members contributed active ideas and assistance to bring it to market.&#160; \u201cWe\u2019ve created a whole line of products based off of Jake\u2019s PivotPower idea. Now, Jake\u2019s a millionaire, and every time a PivotPower sells at Target or another store those 709 people get a profit, in real time. \u201c&#160; &#160;&#160;Kaufman also spoke about Quirky\u2019s partnership with GE that has brought a whole new line of connected products to Home Depot.&#160;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a class=\"asset-img-link\" href=\"http:\/\/inthefold.autodesk.com\/.a\/6a017c3334c51a970b019b0233335e970b-pi\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"3\" border=\"0\" class=\"asset  asset-image at-xid-6a017c3334c51a970b019b0233335e970b image-full img-responsive\" src=\"http:\/\/inthefold.autodesk.com\/.a\/6a017c3334c51a970b019b0233335e970b-800wi\" title=\"3\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Mark Hatch, CEO of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techshop.ws\">Techshop<\/a>, discussed some of the ways that Techshop is helping drive new industrial revolutions by giving access to new tools and technology to a broad audience of users.&#160; He cited the example of the new Detroit-area Techshop that was funded in part by Ford Motor Corporation and is open to the more than 30,000 engineers who are living in the area, most of whom are not working actively as engineers at Ford.&#160; \u201cSince the Techshop Detroit opening, Ford has seen a 55% increase in high quality patentable ideas.&#160; More than half of those are directly attributable to opening our shop to Ford employees. &#160;Right now there is a product idea that came up at Techshop that will probably go onto cars their cars \u2013 and this came from engineer who worked in marketing. &#160;There was no long product development process, just a smart guy with the right ideas and access to tools.\u201d &#160;&#160;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">&#160; <a class=\"asset-img-link\" href=\"http:\/\/inthefold.autodesk.com\/.a\/6a017c3334c51a970b019b023335d2970b-pi\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"4\" border=\"0\" class=\"asset  asset-image at-xid-6a017c3334c51a970b019b023335d2970b image-full img-responsive\" src=\"http:\/\/inthefold.autodesk.com\/.a\/6a017c3334c51a970b019b023335d2970b-800wi\" title=\"4\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>David Benjamin, founder of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelivingnewyork.com\">The Living<\/a>, showed work that his firm has done to use <a href=\"http:\/\/www.autodeskresearch.com\/projects\/cyborg\">Autodesk Project Cyborg<\/a> to explore, \u201cA new design approach &#8212; to generate, evaluate, evolve, select and produce.&#160; We can now harness incredible biological systems and to make and apply them at a different scale.&#160; Biological systems are already computers and factories.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a class=\"asset-img-link\" href=\"http:\/\/inthefold.autodesk.com\/.a\/6a017c3334c51a970b019b0233b942970d-pi\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"5\" border=\"0\" class=\"asset  asset-image at-xid-6a017c3334c51a970b019b0233b942970d image-full img-responsive\" src=\"http:\/\/inthefold.autodesk.com\/.a\/6a017c3334c51a970b019b0233b942970d-800wi\" title=\"5\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The final speaker, MIT Researcher, architect, designer, computer scientist and TED Senior Fellow <a href=\"http:\/\/architecture.mit.edu\/faculty\/skylar-tibbits\">Skylar Tibbits<\/a> showed new examples of his on <a href=\"http:\/\/bioselfassembly.net\">BioMolecular Self-Assembly<\/a> and human scale 4D printing.&#160;&#160; \u201cThere is a design space and a design boom happening.&#160; DNA and biological materials become the building blocks,\u201d said Tibbits. \u201cPowered by Autodesk and others we\u2019ve been able to generate things that we would never have been able to generate before.&#160; We can go a step further and simulate things\u2026optimize things.&#160; And code can communicate with machines so we can physically make things that we couldn\u2019t have made before.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the second of two Innovation Forums at Autodesk University 2013, five speakers explored the New Industrial Revolution and how technologies such as additive manufacturing, 3d and 4d printing, advanced robotics, the maker movement and bio-driven design that are rapidly changing how the world around us is designed and fabricated.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":287,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"inline_featured_image":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-668","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-in-the-fold"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
