Kapur &
\nAssociates<\/a>, a multi-discipline consulting engineering firm, recently helped
\nwith the planning and installation of a new 4.3 million pound commuter railroad
\nbridge outside of Chicago. The project is part of the city\u2019s \u201cBuilding
\na New Chicago<\/a>\u201d program that is designed to update critical infrastructure.
\nKapur & Associates used Autodesk<\/a>
\nBuilding Information Modeling<\/a>
\n(BIM) for infrastructure solutions to create 3D intelligent models for site
\nconstruction layout and survey control, and to generate compelling visuals to
\nhelp communicate to 40 government departments how the enormous, pre-assembled
\ntruss bridge could be moved and installed. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe believe this project includes the largest pre-assembled
\ntruss bridge ever moved into place,\u201d said Dan Kucza, P.L.S., of Kapur &
\nAssociates. \u201cWith help from Autodesk\u2019s Building Information Modeling solutions,
\nwe were able to visually demonstrate how the entire process of moving and
\nhoisting the truss would unfold.  We planned and modeled everything right
\ndown to the Self Propelled Mobile Transporters (SMPT\u2019s) to simulate the 400
\nfoot long, and 2,350 ton truss being rolled 800 feet into position, which
\nhelped secure approval from all of the agencies involved.\u201d <\/p>\n

The massive new rail bridge is part of the \u201cTorrence
\nAvenue Grade Separation Project<\/a>,\u201d which involved a complete redesign and
\nrebuild at the intersection of Torrence Avenue and 130th<\/sup> Street in
\nChicago. The goal of the project was to help allow traffic to pass below two
\nnew bridges for the Norfolk Southern (NS) Railroad, thus eliminating the
\ncurrent at-grade crossing of these tracks and improve traffic flow to the
\nsurrounding areas. The entire project included six new bridges, realignment of
\nthe commuter railroad tracks and roads, a new drainage system, retaining walls,
\nlighting, traffic signals, a mixed-use pedestrian path and extensive
\nlandscaping. The project is the first major milestone of a $101 million
\ninfrastructure project designed to make the city\u2019s urban rail network run more
\nefficiently. <\/p>\n

To help visually communicate the entire project\u2019s scope to
\ntechnical and non-technical stakeholders, including clients, 40 government
\ndepartments and the general public, the Kapur & Associates team used
\nAutodesk BIM for infrastructure software solutions included as part of the Autodesk
\nInfrastructure Design Suite<\/a>.<\/p>\n
