Organovo<\/a>
\nHoldings — a creator and manufacturer of functional, three-dimensional human
\ntissues for medical research and therapeutic applications — announced that it
\nis working together with Autodesk researchers to create the first 3D design software
\nfor bioprinting (See this Washington Post<\/a> science story for how
\nbioprinting works). <\/p>\n

The partnership represents an exciting step forward for
\ndesigning three-dimensional human tissues and has the potential to open up
\nbioprinting to a broader group of users. Currently, design tissue for 3D
\nprinting is limited to programming, and being able to design in 3D will greatly
\nimprove the pace of design and ultimately, the pace of
\nresearch. Organovo\u2019s 3D bioprinting technology is used to create living
\nhuman tissues, and Autodesk Research is lending its expertise in developing
\n3D software for the design and simulation of molecular systems and living
\nsystems.<\/p>\n

\u201cAutodesk is an excellent fit for developing new software
\nfor 3D bioprinters,\u201d said Keith Murphy, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer at
\nOrganovo. \u201cThis partnership will lead to advances in bioprinting, including
\nboth greater flexibility and throughput internally, and the potential long-term
\nability for customers to design their own 3D tissues for production by
\nOrganovo.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cBioprinting has the potential to change the world,\u201c said
\nJeff Kowalski, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at Autodesk.
\n\u201cIt\u2019s a blend of engineering, biology and 3D printing, which makes it a natural
\nfor Autodesk. I think working with Organovo to explore and evolve this emerging
\nfield will yield some fascinating and radical advances in medical research.\u201d<\/p>\n
