My niece, Jing Jing, had just turned 4, and the question referred to what would be her third language after Mandarin, her native tongue, and English, a requisite for the upwardly mobile middle class in China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking through the WeChat video screen at my niece fumbling with a teddy bear in the background, I gave the most preposterous answer I could think of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cC++,\u201d I quipped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My aunt and uncle beamed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, I can\u2019t help but feel a twinge of responsibility when I video chat with 13-year-old Jing. Jing&#8217;s room overflows with trophies from Scratch coding competitions, co-curricular math workbooks, and mechanical machinations from robotics summer camps. She is a coding whiz kid, a regional math champion, a budding programmer fluent in Python, Java, and soon JavaScript. She is readying herself to compete in the global workforce. She is prepared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>But is she?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2018, the World Economic Forum (WEF) estimated that \u201c65% of children entering primary school today will ultimately end up working in <a href=\"https:\/\/reports.weforum.org\/future-of-jobs-2016\/chapter-1-the-future-of-jobs-and-skills\/?doing_wp_cron=1626822050.1422820091247558593750\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">completely new job types that don\u2019t yet exist<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What good does knowing JavaScript do when those jobs might not exist? Those skills might get her a job today, but what about in 2030 when she enters the workforce? What about tomorrow?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>The World Economic Forum estimates that 65% of kids entering elementary school today will end up working in jobs that don\u2019t yet exist.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>My Chinese relatives\u2019 anxiety is understandable. In a country of 1.39 billion people, where the number of students enrolled in degree programs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/special-report\/2011\/03\/19\/a-work-in-progress\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">grew five-fold<\/a> in the span of 14 years, the job market is tightening. White-collar job growth has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-china-whitecollar\/middle-class-dream-fades-for-china-white-collar-workers-idUSTRE6BE0US20101215\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tapered off<\/a> while wages <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/economy\/china-economy\/article\/3008273\/chinas-white-collar-workers-earned-less-first-quarter-2019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stagnate<\/a>. Postsecondary degrees don\u2019t hold the same weight. It isn\u2019t exclusive to China, either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s new is the growing body of research that points to how automation and globalization will upend the nature of work, the types of work available to humans, and how people and machines work together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>While business and government are figuring out the best steps forward for society, what\u2019s a young person today to do?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/reports\/the-future-of-jobs-report-2018\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Future of Jobs Report<\/a>, the World Economic Forum hails a \u201cFourth Industrial Revolution\u201d in which new job categories emerge, displacing others, and the skills needed to thrive in all occupations adapt alongside their industries. <em>Where will people work? How will people work? What skills will they need to succeed in the jobs of the future?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pandemic has already shown us one answer to the first question: anywhere, if your job (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/what-ceos-really-think-about-remote-work-11600853405\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">and your CEO<\/a>) allows for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My employer, Autodesk, is working with cross-sector leaders to help answer the other two questions. With support from the Autodesk Foundation, we explored the unique opportunities and challenges for workers across Asia Pacific. <a href=\"https:\/\/damassets.autodesk.net\/content\/dam\/autodesk\/www\/campaigns\/future-of-work\/the-future-of-work-is-now-deloitte-2021.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">What we found surprised us<\/a>. While digitization and automation will affect all workers across sectors and geographies, some are more at risk. And while solutions abound, workers who cannot access them\u2014especially those who don\u2019t speak English\u2014are most at risk of being left behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Autodesk is also working closely with the World Economic Forum to integrate its global skills taxonomy into our upskilling and reskilling programs for our employees and customers to ensure they can thrive long into the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Future of Work Practice Lead at Autodesk, <strong>Kate McElligott<\/strong>, \u201cIn the future, workers will be increasingly hired based on their skills and expertise rather than pedigree or prior experience. As a result, new systems are needed to validate knowledge in increasingly nimble and creative ways\u2014which is both exciting and disruptive to the status quo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cWorkers will be increasingly hired based on skills and expertise rather than pedigree. New systems are needed to validate knowledge in increasingly nimble and creative ways.\u201d<\/p><cite><strong>Kate McElligott, Future of Work Practice Lead at Autodesk<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Systemic change takes time. But in the short term, workers can focus on acquiring the most in-demand skills that don\u2019t require formal education. According to WEF, active learning, resilience, stress tolerance, and flexibility are increasingly in demand, with critical thinking and problem solving topping the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2020\/10\/top-10-work-skills-of-tomorrow-how-long-it-takes-to-learn-them\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">list of skills<\/a> employers believe will grow in the next five years. Here are the things I know to be true:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>We don&#8217;t know what the future holds. <\/strong>Despite the best efforts of economists, historians, statisticians, futurists, and consultants, we still can\u2019t predict precisely what the future holds. But we <em>can <\/em>prepare kids with foundational skills.<\/li><li><strong>We need to teach foundational skills. <\/strong>These include the interpersonal\u2014like teamwork, collaboration, empathy, and citizenship\u2014and the technical\u2014like the building blocks of innovation that can be remixed, converged, or combined to tackle old problems in new ways.<\/li><li><strong>We can start anywhere, anytime.<\/strong> For many, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tinkercad.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tinkercad<\/a>\u00ae software is the first step in a lifelong learning journey that begins in middle school. But we&#8217;ve seen plenty of success from educators using Tinkercad for project-based learning (PBL) in math, science, language arts, and even art classes <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/melinda_valdez1\/status\/1400301502510608385\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">as early as first grade<\/a>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jaime Perkins<\/strong>, Director of Learning Strategies at Autodesk, stresses the importance of the \u201cfour Cs\u201d for this age group: critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and communication. He cites <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/speakers\/carol_dweck\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Carol Dweck\u2019s work<\/a> on the psychology of success. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cIn secondary education, mindsets are as important, if not more important, than toolset or skillset. What Autodesk is doing with Tinkercad has a lot to do with shaping mindsets for the future.&#8221;<\/p><cite><strong>Jaime Perkins, Director of Learning Strategies at Autodesk<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember that old saying \u201cknowledge is power\u201d? Let\u2019s equalize power by lighting the path for tomorrow\u2019s makers, designers, and creative problem solvers. Knowing how to make things allows us to do more than just consume. It allows us to create. And that\u2019s powerful\u2014because it means we\u2019re not passively accepting the current state of the world: we\u2019re actively participating to rewrite the rules, defy the odds, and shape the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Realizing an idea and holding it in our hands isn\u2019t just powerful: it\u2019s <em>empowering<\/em>. The physical world isn\u2019t going away in the future, and neither are the opportunities for people who know how to make things. The future of work is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/future-of-work\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">evolving<\/a>, design and make are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/industry\/convergence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">converging<\/a>, and everyone deserves a fair shot at playing in the game. We need more kids growing up with the skills, experience, and confidence to know that they can create a better world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Knowing how to make things is powerful because it means we\u2019re not <em>passively <\/em>accepting the state of the world: we\u2019re <em>actively <\/em>rewriting the rules.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Sure, machines are getting smarter by the day (I see you, Alexa, Siri, Waymo, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/solutions\/generative-design\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">generative design<\/a>). But as far as I\u2019m concerned, the most important intelligence isn\u2019t artificial: it\u2019s in us. Anyone can make anything when equipped with the right tools, training, and opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s why Autodesk is committed to inspiring the next generation to imagine, design, and make a better world. With <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tinkercad.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tinkercad<\/a>, kids can go from manipulating basic shapes on a work plane to building light-up skyscrapers programmed in 3D. They can even realize their designs in the physical world with access to 3D printers, breadboards, and circuits\u2014tools that are becoming more ubiquitous in schools and makerspaces around the world. But the most important intelligence isn\u2019t artificial: it\u2019s in us.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Business and industry will always demand innovators who create solutions to our toughest problems as the world demands more, faster, cheaper, and better. But the point isn\u2019t whether our kids should learn JavaScript or C++ or HTML to prepare for that future. What gets lost in the conversation about kids and the future is this: <em>Are they kind? Are they curious? Do they enjoy what they do? Will they be good stewards of our planet?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When I video chat with Jing today, she doesn\u2019t list off the programming languages she knows, or the courses she\u2019s taken. She doesn\u2019t recall the specific tools or lessons taught. Instead, she remembers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first time she held a 3D-printed object in her hands\u2014one she designed all by herself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The way her teachers inspire her with inventions of the past and challenges of the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The length of the list of ideas she\u2019s jotted down since learning how to make and design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How many of those ideas she\u2019s brought to life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How many of those she\u2019s yet to tackle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Daria Zhao leads product marketing for Youth (K-12) at Autodesk, a company that makes software for people who make things.
