Over the last couple of years, there has been an abundance of new sensors cropping up in the market. Among the many, the new DOT DPI-7 has garnered some attention.
While this clip best demonstrates the capabilities and ease of capturing 3D data with the DPI, we wanted to show the process of merging these points with other structured data taken from 3D laser scanner; Scanners like; Faro, Leica, Z+F, Trimble, Riegl and others. For those who are less familiar with scanning, structured scan data is mainly coming from terrestrial (ground based) scanning devices;
Below is a simple step by step process of combining the data from the two different sources into one unified model in ReCap Pro (a software solution from Autodesk for handling “reality capture” data that’s recorded by these various solutions);
For example, if the resolution segment doesn’t play a big role in the scanning project, sometimes these handheld sensor devices can be sufficient and can supplement missing data from 3D point clouds without the need of rescanning the space with the terrestrial 3D laser scanners.
The steps are:
1) After acquiring points from the DOT scanner optimize and export the scene as PTX file format;
– Select “Z is Up” if necessary;
2) Create new ReCap Project and click on “Select Folder to Import”;
– Select the PTX scans folder and index your files
3) After indexing save your project in ReCap;
4) Open the RCP project in ReCap containing the structured data;
– In this case the project with the FARO Focus 3D scans
5) Click on Home > Import;
– Import the DOT product scans by selecting the RCP project file with the DOT scans;
– If ReCap Pro is enabled click on “Register Scans” to start the registration process;
– 2 registration groups should appear;
– On one side the Faro scans, and on the other the DOT scans from the other project;
6) Choose the most similar views from the two registration groups and select 3 identical features;
7) Automatic registration will start, merging the 2 scan groups together.
– If the results are in the “Green zone”, click on the “Refine Scan” button;
8) Confirm the alignment and launch your project;
