Cloud services Revit Live, Collaboration for Revit, BIM 360 Team, and Insight take center stage

Well over a decade ago, architects were the first AEC professionals to embrace Building Information Modeling (BIM) as a new method of working. Now, architects are leading the way again by embracing the power of cloud technology to yield better design outcomes. At the AIA Conference on Architecture 2017  April 27-29 in Orlando, FL, Autodesk is highlighting three emerging opportunities for cloud-connected BIM.

Immersive Visualization & Virtual Reality

Previewed as Project Expo at the 2016 AIA convention, Autodesk has since launched Revit Live, a cloud service which allows architects and designers to turn their Revit and Revit LT models into immersive, interactive experiences with a click of a button. With a second click, architects can experience their designs in virtual reality. Both immersive visualization and VR are becoming one of the best ways to understand and evaluate designs, and the simplicity of Revit Live and its integration with Revit allows architects and designers to more easily incorporate these capabilities into their iterative design process.

In today’s on-demand world, most architects don’t have the time, patience, or money to wait days or weeks to iterate on a design in VR, which is why Revit Live and its seamless workflow with Revit is a disruptive force in the industry.

Seamless Collaboration

As design and construction processes have become more tightly linked and collaborative project delivery methods continue to rise, project teams increasingly demand tools supporting unique data management and collaboration needs of the AEC industry. Building on the success of our design collaboration tools, BIM 360 Team and Collaboration for Revit, along with BIM 360 Docs for construction, Autodesk will soon offer a comprehensive, cloud-native project delivery solution for the AEC market. Underpinning this solution will be a Common Data Environment to facilitate collaboration across the entire project lifecycle. This includes connecting design to construction workflows, as well as operations and maintenance to create feedback loops informing the design and construction of future projects.

Design Optimization: Supporting Our Practice to Achieve the AIA 2030 Goals

The AIA 2030 Commitment is a framework to pursue the 2030 Challenge, which aims to achieve net zero carbon on all new buildings, developments, and major renovations by the year 2030. “Addressing climate change is one of the greatest design challenges of our time, and is essential to the long-term success of both business and society.” Those were the words by which Autodesk’s co-CEOs, Andrew Anagnost and Amar Hanspal, laid out our position on sustainability and design.

Last year, Autodesk announced the release of a new, collaboratively developed tool automating the AIA 2030 data reporting to the Design Data Exchange (DDx).

After approximately seven years of industry reporting, less than 50 percent of the practice is doing so.

Here are seven tactics you can take to meet the AIA 2030 Challenge.

At AIA 2017 Autodesk will show how  we’ve made reporting easy as the free DDx API is already integrated into Autodesk Insight for Revit and Autodesk FormIt for Revit, removing the headache of manual reporting.

Spotlight on HOK

HOK gets a Gold Star from Mother Earth, and we’re singing their praises at AIA 2017. Sustainability is in HOK’s DNA – and is a guiding principle and requirement of their design practice.  HOK was one of the early signatories of the AIA 2030 Commitment and expects to achieve the 2030 goals early.

“We make sure our architects are empowered to seek feedback in terms of performance earlier and more often in the design process,” says Anica Landreneau, HOK’s Director of Sustainable Design. “That’s where the Insight tool has been really helpful. Nobody should have to work in the dark.”

As a policy, HOK aims to run energy analysis on every project. Prior to adopting Insight, the technical complexity of this undertaking proved challenging for many of the firm’s non-specialists. Autodesk tools have helped make energy analysis accessible to all design professionals – not just specialists, anymore.
