Under the Hood - All things PDM and PLM

This one is the most requested feature we may have had on anything ever:  Adding auto numbering to Copy Design.

It was painful for users faithfully adopting standardised numbering schemes and complying with company standards, who were required for the longest time to copy their files and then search for them in Vault to carry out a rename which permitted application of their default numbering scheme, but all this has changed in the new copy design.

Administrators can now set up their numbering schemes in Vault and then decide which schemes should be available in copy design as well as set the copy design default scheme.

During copy design configuration, users can (via the Numbering Scheme panel) assign files to different schemes by simply right clicking, and set the scheme values, where appropriate, changing list values, entering free text and with the old filename displayed, check the old and new name of files for correctness

For those not using numbering schemes and wanting to leverage the legacy naming methods in copy design we have added the "None" scheme in Copy Design only.  You will see in the video below this still permits users to add prefix and postfix values, modify the file name text directly, as well as find and replace text strings (another crowd favorite) to assist in a faster file rename experience.

You'll notice that the new number formats appear on the main grid in preview mode, the actual numbers though are not assigned until you run the copy command.

If you are having trouble navigating the old name / new name details in the main grid view during configuration you can switch on the original file name to assist here too.

Once you have your file names and numbering set up correctly you can hit the execute button – now the next available numbers are taken out of the system and files created in complete compliance with your companies numbering standards.  No find, no extra steps – simple and integrated naming the way it should be.
