Under the Hood - All things PDM and PLM

One of the new features we have touched on in some of my earlier posts (customer ideas implemented in 2017 and the appstore update) is a popular appstore enhancement for Vault Professional and Workgroup 2017 – “Insert into CAD”.

Over time we have made a number of improvements to the open from Vault and Place from Vault dialog boxes inside Inventor, but found increasingly users still preferred to search for and grab their models from the Vault Explorer.  To address this we have in recent times updated the open from Vault Explorer command to better align with the Inventor add-in but this did not help with place from Vault.

The insert from Vault command now though allows you to simply browse to or search for the file you need and right click to insert into CAD.

Insert

Of course you need to have already started an Inventor session and have an open assembly to insert your assembly or part into, but after selecting to insert into CAD the files are downloaded to your local working directory to ensure there are no reference issues on check in, and we switch to the Inventor window to place the model.

The Insert from CAD command can only be applied to one selection at a time but that can be an assembly of part file and if we are working from a single folder or search results, its simple to move between the Vault Explorer and CAD window to continue placement.

We hope this simple productivity enhancement speeds up the placement process by bypassing the place from Vault dialog and better aligning with existing user workflows.
