Under the Hood - All things PDM and PLM

In times of virus outbreaks and hacker attacks, anti-virus programs are very important in protecting your systems. Nevertheless, anti-virus programs can slow down performance tremendously depending on how they are configured. There are two articles you might be interested in reading to help you with setting anti-virus programs to work with Autodesk products.

One thing we want to cover as well are the exclusions related to SQL Merge Replication. This technology is used in the background for Connected Workgroups in Vault. SQL Merge Replication requires additional processes to be excluded or marked as a low-risk process in anti-virus programs.

On the Publisher, there is the snapshot process (snapshot.exe). This process is responsible for creating a snapshot of the databases for merge replication. By default, it is scheduled at midnight from Saturday to Sunday. You can find this executable in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\VersionNr\COM (find a list of SQL build numbers here)

On the Subscriber, there is the replication merge process (replmerg.exe). There is one process running for each replicated database. This executable is located in the same directory as snapshot.exe: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\VersionNr\COM.

With a correctly configured anti-virus program, performance bottlenecks are removed from the processes responsible for SQL Merge replication to help prevent uninterrupted fast data flow between servers and clients.
