BIM 360 Docs Roadmap

BIM 360 Docs Roadmap Update

Joan Allen
December 18, 2016

Welcome to the BIM 360 Docs Roadmap.  As part of the ongoing conversation we have with the BIM 360 Docs community, we want to share the general direction of our product development plan.  The published roadmap is not comprehensive and is subject to change.  We will update the roadmap periodically to reflect feature releases and any changes.

BIM 360 Docs Product Vision:

Our vision for BIM 360 Docs is to provide a cloud-based collaboration and document management solution, tailored for the needs of the AEC industry, with tools for publishing, managing, reviewing, and approving all project plans, models and documents from the earliest phase of a project through owner occupancy.

Our roadmap to deliver on that vision is focused on these key areas:  Document Management; Work-in-progress (WIP) Design Collaboration; View, Review, and Approval Workflows; Mobile; and Administration / Platform:

(Recent updates in red italics below)

Document Management

  • Consistently manage folders, subfolders, and documents across the solution (move and copy any document – even extracted sheets – delivered in January-February 2017)
  • Export 2D drawings – with or without markups (PDF drawing export with markup – from “Plans” folders – released July 2017)
  • Streamline document upload and publishing (PDF upload improvements released in April 2017)
  • Manage document sets with Document Registry
  • Find critical information fast with enhanced search, filter, and sort options
  • Improve collaboration with enhanced notifications and linking (copy URL capability released in February 2017)

  • Access directly from desktop authoring apps via Autodesk Drive integration with Docs
  • Extend your Revit workflows with Collaboration for Revit integration with Docs

View, Review, and Approval Workflows

  • Create, manage, and track Requests for Information (RFI’s) (RFI feature introduced in January 2017 and additional web and mobile capabilities released in subsequent updates)
  • Expand markup capabilities to “Project Files” folders; delete markups and control visibility (markup and issues extended to “Project Files” folders, June – July 2017)
  • Manage project submittal reviews and approvals
  • Manage document approvals
  • View and navigate multiple 3D aggregated (combined) models

Mobile

  • Android – offline access and sync (offline access released in February 2017)
  • Android – ability to create markups, issues, and RFI’s online or offline (markup, issues, and RFI capabilities released February – April 2017)
  • iOS – access and create RFI’s, online or offline (RFI feature available on iOS in January 2017, additional capabilities released February – April 2017)
  • iOS – updated user experience for improved usability (search and offline management capabilities released June – July 2017)

Administration and Platform

  • Access Docs through a unified BIM 360 user experience (released June 2017)
  • Enhance permissions and improve the project administration user experience (view-only permission released December 2017)
  • Connect to enterprise applications and data with enhanced Forge API’s

In addition to the product roadmap, we also publish Release Notes with every Docs web and mobile update.  We encourage you to subscribe to that page so that you can stay up-to-date on the latest features and improvements.

This information is intended to outline our general product direction and it should not be relied on in making a purchasing decision.  The development, release, and timing of any features or functionality described for our products remains at our sole discretion.

It will best a big plus if we can have BIM 360 product family federated using Vault as single source of truth (SSOT)

We are running it as a limited beta at the moment to collect feedback and optimize the experiences. Stay tuned for more updates on this topic on our release notes later this year.

When will (Access directly from desktop authoring apps via Autodesk Drive integration with Docs) be available?

    Thanks

I know you have some awesome things coming for Docs in the future. Yay!

And I don’t know if this is true, but in particular I’ve heard that Docs integrated Glue and Field features are currently in beta with select customers.

I guess hence the UI update coming in a few days.

So, are these ready to be added to the road map, and with a possible timeframe? 8^)

Edit: Oh, and what about Project IQ? I assume this will also be part of Docs/BIM360.

We have updated the roadmap, noting which items have been delivered over the past few months.  We have also added an item for the markup improvements you have been requesting (Expand markup capabilities to “Project Files” folders; delete markups and control visibility).

    Best Regards,

Thanks for the feedback everyone. We’re certainly working hard these days to deliver this great roadmap. You probably noticed already we’re not shipping everything out in one big bang but instead crossing off items in that list in an iterative way every two weeks. I highly recommend you all to subscribe to the BIM 360 Docs release notes so you can get updates directly to your inbox when those are released.

    Best regards,

    Ilai

This is a great vision – hopefully the time frame to getting this deployed and in the hands of customers is now very soon!  Looks like released about 3 months ago — hopefully almost all of these items will soon be coming out in release notes and allowing us to use.

    This list looks great.

I’m particularly interested in the submittal reviews/approvals. I’ve seen Docs images online showing a concept of ‘Sets’. I’m hoping this forms part of submittals. Edit: Sorry, I completely overlooked the point of Sets in the list.

    I have one question.

Does ‘View and navigate multiple 3D aggregated (combined) models’ refer to being able to combine in a way similar to Glue’s concept of Merged Models?

Piecing this together, does this form the basis of a Glue implementation as noted by Ilai here?  8^)
