BIM 360 Docs Custom Attributes Enhancements – September 21, 2021

Audrey Boguchwal
September 21, 2021

The September BIM 360 release contains improvements to custom attributes administration that allow for more control over attribute values. Please note: these improvements apply to BIM 360 Docs projects created after March 23, 2021.

Members with edit or folder control permissions and project administrators can now set constraints for text attribute values. With constraints set, members entering attribute values will only be permitted to enter text that conforms to the constraints.

Setting Constraints: Character Settings For Text Field Attributes

Set Character setting constraints for text field attributes:

Character length: Select from: Any, Fixed, or Range.

  • Any – Allows members to enter a maximum 255 characters as a value.
  • Fixed – Fix the value length to be an exact number from 1 to 10 characters.
  • Range – Select a value range from 1 to 10 characters.

Character type: Select from Alphanumeric, Text, or Numeric.

Editing Constraints: Editing Character Settings and Editing Dropdown Values

Project Administrators can edit attributes on the project. Members with edit or folder control permissions can’t edit attributes which are added to folders by other members, but can edit attributes they have added to folders themselves.

The new text attribute character settings can be edited at any time if those attributes are NOT part of the project’s Naming Standard. Additionally, dropdown attribute values may be renamed if the dropdown attribute is not part of the Naming Standard.

Changes to text field attribute character settings will not automatically change any existing document attribute values which do not comply with the changed constraints. As part of this new feature, non-complying values will display in yellow in the documents list and can be edited to comply with the new character settings.
