Autodesk ReCap was the star attraction at this week’s SPAR Point Group’s International Conference in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The SPAR International Conferences bring together a broad set of laser scanning, imaging, construction and engineering professionals to discover the latest advances and technologies in 3D data capture, processing and delivery.
The Autodesk booth was consistently busy, with lots of interest from attendees seeking to learn more about the new ReCap solution. A key addition to the Autodesk 2014 portfolio of design and creation suites, Autodesk ReCap is a family of new reality capture software and cloud services that simplifies the process of creating intelligent 3D data of physical objects and environments using laser scans and photos, allowing customers to bring the actual job site or physical objects into their design and engineering process. It is the only solution on the market to combine both laser scanning and photographs into one reality capture workflow.
Autodesk’s Aaron Morris wowed the crowds at SPAR with a center stage demonstration of ReCap
Robert Shear, director of strategic programs and platforms and reality capture, and Elmer Bol director, reality capture, were on hand to give key members of the press – including reporters from Point of Beginning, Professional Surveyor, Informed Infrastructure and LiDAR News – a first-hand experience with Autodesk ReCap.
Prior to the show opening on Wednesday, Robert gave a video of the tour(captured with Autodesk Socialcam) that opens with explanation of the scope of the SPAR International exhibits, followed by highlights of the booth demos, including a center stage preview of Autodesk ReCap Photo; a “Laser Scanning to BIM” demo; a demo using Autodesk ReCap input with Autodesk Building Design Suite software; and a station dedicated to showcasing Autodesk ReCap used with Autodesk Plant Design Suite.

The SPAR conference also offered Autodesk partners an opportunity to show off technologies designed to support Autodesk’s Reality Capture solutions and other software solutions. In a shortv video, Scott Diaz of kubit talks about their plug-in solutions designed to help fill the gap between laser scanning and finished design models. Scott notes their support for the Autodesk 2014 Suites, and the integration of Autodesk ReCap (with its ability to now support extremely high resolution point clouds).

In her short video, Barbara McInerney of Topcon discusses the theme of their booth, “Capture Reality” throgh laser scanning and imaging, scanning and mobile mapping data being imported into Autodesk ReCap, and from there being imported into various Autodesk design software.
