Under the Hood - All things PDM and PLM

Moving on through the main portions of the new Copy Design UI, we come to the Vault Ribbon strip – this is where we do a lot of the view setup and tweak the copy configuration.

Lets start with the big buttons – you guys will gradually notice more and more of this ribbon style in our dialogs as we start to modernize the user interface, similar to the get file command for example, this contains all of the current session actions and options – things you may want to apply or change every time a data set is loaded.

First up is add file, obviously pretty critical if you start copy design without selecting one or more files, but can also be used to add additional files to copy (note there is no way to remove files yet, you just need to set to "reuse" or log out and back in – we're looking at that).

Once the files are loaded you can change the "include children" view settings so that attachments and content center files are shown.  You notice when you add visibility for one or both of these, the button turns blue.  This is simply an indicator that you have set something here – run your mouse over the top to preview what is set.

A quick tip for this one – this is only a visibility setting – by default attachments and content center files are reused, if you want to do something different with them (or just like to clutter up your view) this is your setting to view them.

Next on the menu is Copy Settings – this option is a little different to the include children options as the settings here are a one off, this carries out the selected action on the current dataset and is reset for next use, not at all sticky.  We use this to do a quick configuration "copy all" to copy all objects currently loaded or "copy top nodes" to copy the parent files selected (remembering we can add more than one file to copy at a time).

The last option before we get to the "execute button" is the copy Rule Set.  We will save the details on creating rule sets for another day, but this option allows users to have a say in the new file properties and category assignment.

If you do not select a ruleset here, Copy Design will (wherever possible) copy all the original file properties to the new file and keep the same category (lifecycle scheme and rev scheme for that category) – otherwise you can select another rule set, allowing you to clear and reset values in the new file, reset its category to default or map some specific values.  Once again, with a rule selected the button turns blue and the tooltip tells you which rule you are using.

Note too – we added a "Default Rule Set" that is designed to behave like the old copy design – using this should provide the same property results as the old version of Copy Design.

With these configurations set you should be on your way to completing a copy design – stay tuned though as we dig into the more advanced menu options and workflows associated with the main menu and panels!
