Design decisions shape carbon outcomes from the very first massing move. Run a Total Carbon analysis in Forma Building Design to understand the embodied and operational carbon impact during early-phase workflows. Think of it as an early-stage total carbon calculator.

The workflow described in this article shows you how to generate results in Forma Building Design and continue the analysis in Forma Carbon Insights (formerly Autodesk Insight) if you need more detail.

If you want to learn more about Forma Carbon Insights, or the data or methods behind the analysis, see the documentation in the Revit help here.

How to run a Total Carbon analysis in Forma Building Design

Open your design proposal in Forma Building Design.

1. Enter the Total Carbon analysis, as shown below:

2. Select the building or buildings you want to analyze.
3. In the left panel, review and adjust the analysis settings:

4. Click Run analysis.
5. You can close the analysis window. The status appears in Analysis History as In progress and updates automatically when complete.

Operational carbon calculations rely on an Energy Analytical Model (EAM) and gbXML-based workflows. For more information, see:

Review total carbon results

Once the analysis is completed, the results panel displays the following:

Use these results to compare how changes to massing, envelope assumptions, or other settings affect carbon outcomes.

To test alternatives:

  1. Adjust one or more analysis settings.
  2. Click Run analysis again.
  3. Compare the updated results.

Open the analysis in Forma Carbon Insights

For more detailed configuration and transparency, click Open in Forma Carbon Insights.

In Forma Carbon Insights, you can:

The analysis in Forma Building Design provides embedded, high-level guidance. Forma Carbon Insights gives you configurability and depth. Together, they support a connected workflow from early massing to more detailed analysis.

Recommended workflow

  1. Shape your building.
  2. Enter Total Carbon.
  3. Adjust assumptions.
  4. Click Run analysis.
  5. Compare, iterate, and refine.
  6. Open in Forma Carbon Insights when you need more detail.

Frequently asked questions

What is Forma Building Design?
Forma Building Design is a cloud-based analysis and schematic design software that makes early design exploration faster and lower-effort. It helps architects shape multiple options quickly, test performance, and move designs directly into Revit.
What is difference between Forma Site Design and Forma Building Design?
Forma Site Design helps teams understand wider site conditions and optimize the site’s potential for a feasibility study. It suits site planning and site analysis.

Forma Building Design helps teams determine building design direction for specific plots and blocks, including unit mix — so they can explore more ideas before it’s time for BIM and then move forward. It is used for schematic design.

Teams can easily switch between Site Design and Building Design with the direct integration.
When should I use Forma Building Design vs Revit?
Forma Building Design and Revit are complementary. Use Forma Building Design at early stage of the process — to explore ideas, test performance, and validate direction during schematic design. Then, move designs directly into Revit as geolocated, native Revit models for detailed design development and documentation.
What problem does Forma Building Design solve in schematic design?
Forma Building Design helps teams explore more design options earlier and with greater confidence during schematic design. In schematic design, exploring multiple ideas is essential but often time-consuming and effortful, leading teams to potentially test fewer options and commit too early without full confidence.
How does Forma Building Design help me explore more design options faster?
Forma Building Design helps you add details to buildings in minutes using easy tools and design automations for facades, floor plans, and units — so you can iterate quickly before complex modelling.
What design automations are included in Forma Building Design?
With Forma Building Design you can create and edit floor plans and facades with a few clicks, with updates reflected automatically in plan, elevation, and perspective. You can also customize groups of windows, doors, and balconies.
What performance analysis can I run in Forma Building Design?
Forma Building Design includes integrated analysis so you can test performance while you design, including sun hours, daylight potential for facades and windows, and total carbon (Note: Total carbon is currently available for the US. Stay tuned for news about availability for other regions).
Is Forma Building Design available in the browser?
Yes — teams can access Forma Building Design from the browser without any setup, making it easy to get started quickly.
What is the pricing and availability of Forma Building Design?
Forma Building Design is available through the Architecture, Engineering & Construction (AEC) Collection, Revit subscriptions, and the Forma for Buildings bundle.
How do I log into Forma Building Design?
If you have an active AEC Collection, Revit, or Forma for Buildings subscription, you can log into Forma Building Design with your Autodesk account. Log in to Forma Building Design here. Not a subscriber? You may be eligible for a free trial. Are you a student or educator? Get free software for students and educators here.
