The Podcast

Pierre-Paul Andriani, a Design Studio specialist at Autodesk sits down with Carl Lyttle, owner of Domeble for this Design Studio podcast.

Domeble is a premium rights-managed stock library for photographic backplates, 360-degree domes, and VR environments. Carl is also the co-creator of the Domeble-Symetri Student Awards

Carl Lyttle talks about his experiences and interest in bands growing up and how this led to his interest in photography.

As he progressed through university, he was able to refine how he expressed himself and express his creative and political ideas, and learned to convey his identity.

“Everyone has to have an identity in their journey, in their growth. But that identity . . . It’s a development. It’s a process. And like all creative expression, it has to be a journey, how you get from one point to the next point.”

Always Learning

Eager to embrace new technology, Carl considers himself a “creative chameleon” and has always found ways to play with available tools to advance his creative expression. He’s also very comfortable going off well-traveled roads, even with a few “happy mistakes” to explore and create great images.

With the arrival of generative AI tools like Midjourney, he continues to see opportunities for these tool to advance his creative growth.

Starting in 2007 when working with Nissan, Carl was challenged to create automotive marketing material in 3D software that was indiscernible from real photography. Shooting in Iceland and Scotland with a team of six people, he and his small team were able to go from concept to delivery of the marketing project in two weeks, unheard of at that time.

It wasn’t long before he saw the need for creative artists and designers to license environments in the same way that images can be licensed for use from Shutterstock or iStock.

Carl has never lost sight of how much student awards meant to his early career development. He started collaborating with Nick John at Symetri and over some pints, they discovered they shared a desire to launch a student award.

Student Awards

When the COVID-19 pandemic arrived in 2020, they realized this was a helpful time to launch a student award competition, to provide tangible support for new designers as they started their careers. From this, the Domeble-Symetri Student Awards were born.

Domeble-Symetri Student Awards are juried by a group of senior, highly respected people in their field. Students who enter these competitions have a rare opportunity to get their work in front of some of the best people in the industry. Whether they win the competition or not, this is an amazing opportunity to gain visibility in the industry.

“Why should you enter? Because you will never get a better opportunity to kick-start your career.”
