Here is another reason to argue the merits of a data management tool, SECURITY. How easy is it to imagine losing crucial files? I think it feels almost as certain as death, taxes, or Denver winning the Superbowl (grin). Who hasn’t lost a term paper, a CAD drawing, or the latest CAD version that had all of the really good, espresso inspired changes…
While working as a CAD Administrator, I was often asked to find a file that had been “lost” in our PDM. Often, the user would reluctantly recall how they had attempted to save time and skirt the system saving it somewhere out on the network and not in the PDM. Sadly, those files were typically lost forever. But, all the other cases of people needing the files worked on by another team member in another country were there when you needed them. It seems like such an obvious reason, but here it is, convince people to use data management because they intend to keep their data and not roll the cosmic dice.
